The Santa Cruz Bolivia Stake, the first stake to be formed in that country, was organized Jan. 14 by President Ezra Taft Benson of the Council of the Twelve. (See story on President Benson's South American trip on page 3).

With the formation of this stake, there remain only four countries - Paraguay, Guyana, Surinam and French Guiana - in South America that do not have a stake headquarters within their boundaries.

A ban that forbade all non-Catholic religions existed in Bolivia for many years. In 1963, there were only a few families of American Mormons in the country. These people did much to acquaint local people with the gospel, and in 1964, the first full-time missionaries entered Bolivia from the Andes Mission.

The first baptisms occurred in December 1964, and by 1966, there were branches of the Church organized in Oruro and Santa Cruz. By 1968, there were about 350 members in Bolivia.

In 1972, the Church literacy program was organized in the country to teach illiterate members to read. This program brought much favorable publicity to the Church.

By mid-1978, there were 11,051 members in Bolivia.

P19 Cuzco Peru

"Ancient Inca headquarters now home for a stake" CUZCO PERU: A stake has been created where once stood the headquarters of the mighty Inca empire that stretched across the boundaries of six present-day countries.

Machu Picchui, one of South America's most visited ruins, is located within the boundaries of the stake, some 50 miles northwest of Cuzco.

"The formation of the Cuzco Peru Stake is a significant milestone for the Church, said Elder Howard W. Hunter of the Council of the twelve, who organized the stake of more than 2,300 members on April 28.

Elder Hunter, who has maintained an interest in the archaeological aspect of the area for many years said:

"Many descendants of Incas walk along the streets today. They wear wide bowler hats. It just takes you back a long step in history. Many of our members are Inca descendants."

Cuzco is built upon the ruins of a stone city that was once connected by a vast system of roads to Inca territories along the west coast of South America. Those interests included parts of what are now Colombia, Ecuador, Peru, Bolivia, Chile, and Argentina. The empire, with a long and narrow shape like a modern-day Chile, had a well developed trade economy.

One of the new Cuzco wards is in Sacsayhuaman, located at the site of an Inca fortress. This fortress is known for its walls of huge stones, some up to 16 feet high. The stones were hauled 35 miles and fitted together so tightly that a knife blade cannot be inserted between them.

Elder Hunter's interest in Cusco began many years ago. He recalled a visit to Cusco with Elder Milton R. Hunbter, then of the First Council of the Seventy, in 1965. The two General Authorities spoke to about twenty members at the Cusco Branch. Elder Milton R. Hunter had extensive interests in archaeology.

"It is a remarkable thing to now have a stake organized here," he said.
