Hockey Stick -- Don't get CHECKED!

Karen Irwin

This month I had the opportunity to sit down with our "other" Coach, the new Assistant Coach Rod Davidson.

Coming in after Cappy, he had some pretty big shoes to fill with the fans as well as with the staff and players. Apparently, he has big feet because he has fit in wonderfully here. Several of the players spoke very highly of him, as did Coach Christensen. I enjoyed my conversation with him and found him to be very friendly and likable.

Coach Davidson is married and has two children. His wife is a stockbroker in Canada, his daughter is in high school and his son plays junior hockey. Although his family is in Canada, they arrange for regular visits.

Like all typical Canadians, Coach Davidson played junior and senior hockey in Canada but he did not play in college or the pros. Instead, he has had a successful career in the corporate world and has owned his own business since 1986 in his hometown in Canada. The business is still going strong and it is the ownership of this business that has afforded him the time and opportunity to pursue a second career in hockey.

He has done many different things in the field of hockey but this is his dream job. He is combining his corporate background with his hockey background, which gives him a wealth of experience and knowledge to pass on to the Tiger Sharks. He says he has one job here and that is to win.

"If we win, everybody succeeds and it helps the players and the organization, and makes the fans happier."

He also brings some luck to Tallahassee. The teams he has been affiliated with in the past have gone on to win the championships at the end of the season. Just last season he was with the Utah Grizzlies when they won the Turner Cup. We have had teams that were capable of winning the championship the past three seasons but like Coach Christensen told me last year, you also have to have luck.

Hopefully, Coach Davidson will bring that luck and we can finally claim the Kelly Cup.
