Each ratings point equals 980,000 TV households; the share is the percentage of TV sets tuned into a show. The first number is the ratings point. Each point equals 954,000 homes. The second figure represents the share, or percentage of televisions currently turned on that are tuned into that particular show. A 2.0 rating means that 1,908,000 people watched the show that week. The 8 share means that 8% of the television sets that were actually turned on at the time the show aired were tuned to that particular channel. In other words, the rating number is the percent of all televisions in the country, whether they are turned on or off. The share is the percentage of sets that are turned on AND are tuned into a specific channel.
