This is where it all began 110+ years ago. Sherlock Holmes meets Dr. John H. Watson for the first time in A Study in Scarlet. The story, written over a year before it was finally published, appeared in Beeton's Christmas Annual for 1887. Conan Doyle recieved Ł25 (Pounds) for the rights after being rejected by several publishers. Years later he paid many times that to buy back the rights. Today a copy of Beeton's Christmas Annual is well beyond the reach of all but the wealthiest collectors ... if even they can find it.

A Study in Scarlet is one of four novel lenght Holmes tales and like two of the others, has lenghty 'flashback' chapters that do not even include Sherlock Holmes. Interestingly, the 'flashbacks' all take place outside Britain with two set in the USA and one in India and the Andaman Islands. This story features the Mormons and Utah, and in a not very flattering manner either.
