Girly Cars

When you're driving, do you treat other drivers differently depending on what vehicle they're in? Be honest - would you give way to a black BMW? Or a Volvo?

What about little cars? Do you pull out in front of Micras on motorways, assuming that they're not going to catch you up?

When I was using my Rover 2000 every day, other road users treated me with quite a lot of respect. That aggressive jawline and the classic "look-at-the-old-car" appeal of an early ‘60s design (and perhaps the great way that you could sound the horn and flash the headlamps at the same time) meant that I was usually able to use my right of way.

In fact, the best day's driving I ever had was the time I hired a horsebox for a day to move house - everyone gave way to me, whether it was my right of way or not! I guess the combination of Rover P6 and horsebox is one you don't want to be in the way of.

But my "new" everyday car looks like it's come straight out of a childrens' TV programme. I've finally discovered why Citroën saw fit to put such stupidly over-powered brakes on the 60bhp GS - people pull out in front of it all the time. GSs have a reputation for getting for getting through brake pads quickly - believe me, it's not because of any design flaw. Urban driving is a nightmare as every single side road and mini roundabout spits yet another BMW or 4x4 out into my path. Motorways are worse - I don't dare venture into the right hand lane any more. Other cars flash their lights at me, whether or not I'm far enough ahead and moving fast enough so as not to get in their way. On one occasion, a light-flasher in a Vauxhall then put his foot down to overtake me on the inside, practically hitting the back of the vehicle we were waiting to overtake.

Today I discovered just how low the GS is in the girly-car stakes. I nearly broadsided a woman in a Ford Ka who suddenly did a 3-point turn in front of me on a residential road.

What should I do? Put massive wings and spoilers on the GS? Or just restore the Rover as quickly as possible so that I can go when it's my right of way again?

Please, everyone, leave us girly-car owners alone! We love our little cars and we don't want to bend them!
