An Apology to MGB Owners

I am accused of being anti-MGB. Fair enough, I suppose, I've said on this website that they're more common than Peugeot 309s and should have been put down in the early '70s, and in private that I'd rather see a mechanically similar Austin Cambridge saved than yet another MGB.

But I'm not against them. Really. They're nice cars. I'd never own one, but you're more than welcome to. I'll even say that they're good '60s sports cars, and that they're quite pretty.

So don't I want one? Well, I admit that mainly it's down to my perverse preferences. On the whole there are two kinds of cars that I like - slow, fat, ugly, unloved saloons; and mad, weird and wonderful, usually foreign creations. This is why I own a Rover P6 and a Citroen GS. I reckon my perfect car, the perfect balance between the two, would be a Tatra 603.

The other reason is that I don't really get this whole sporty, Nike trainers and sports cars cult, especially among those of us who use their classic for an everyday car. I'd love to be able to afford to do what some people do, and keep a Caterham Seven for track days at the weekends - but I can't. So I'd rather have a car with four doors and enough space for four adults, please.

So, guys, by all means keep your MGBs - but at least once or twice, why don't you try something different? Maybe even (gasp) something foreign? You may find that an NSU TT is just as fun, or a Citroen DS just as eyecatching. Anyway, you're a classic owner - I thought you didn't want to be part of the crowd?

And keep them away from me as well, please. There was even one of the bloody things at AirCool 2001.
