Rear Wheel Drive

As you can probably tell, this website does not employ a marketing manager. If it did, I would know the profile of my readers. I can probably hazard a guess anyway...

You've probably come in here either via a general classic cars, Rover, or probably Citroen site or search. Even if you've come in as a Citroen fan, you're probably old enough (because of the "classic" bit) that you remember rear-wheel-drive as being an everyday sort of thing - Cortinas and so on.

BMW are trying to sell you a car - their new 1-series. Problem is, it's not as good as the current crop of front-drive family cars. Oops.

So why do we like rear wheel drive so much? Today I rode my bike across a mile of muddy field, changing direction every few seconds to follow a twisty path between various fences, hedges and different crops. I loved every second of it, and phrases from various Capri reviews I've read kept popping up in my head. The steering is light and responsive with no torque steer, but following the line of the path. When you put the power down, the back wheel slides out slightly and deliciously - what a wonderful feeling when your backside is directly above the rear axle!

It's all down to the feeling. And if it feels like that on a one-horsepower bike (admittedly on soft and slippery mud), what must it feel like in a powerful rally car on gravel or snow on the RAC rally? Fantastic.
