Kirsten has agreed to become India coach: BCCI

Kirsten will be offered a two-year contract but the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) will like to make the official announcement after the contract

is sealed.

According to BCCI secretary Niranjan Shah, the coach selection committee headed by Sunil Gavaskar, which interviewed Kirsten was satisfied with the South African's presentation.

BCCI chief Sharad Pawar and Test captain Anil Kumble were also present along with other members of the selection committee during the interview with Kirsten here last night.

''The coach selection committee was satisfied with him. Kirsten has agreed in principle to take over as the coach of the Indian cricket team,'' he said.

Shah further said, ''BCCI will offer him a two-year contract if he takes up the job. We will work out all the details.'' Kirsten played 101 Tests and 185 one-day internationals for South Africa in an 11-year career that ended in 2004.

The interview proceedings were kept a closely guarded secret as BCCI, having burnt its fingers earlier when it named Graham Ford the coach in June but he subsequently refused to take up the offer leaving the board officials red-faced.

The board then advertised the post and according to Shah the committee to select the coach had received more than 20 applications for the job
