Remember We Came
We Marched so smartly from the ships
to join the fight for freedom
We hid our fears with tough talk and beer flirting a little
We were scared but we came
We came from every part of the country that made up ours
we were recent high school students, lawyers,
machanics, bakers, truck drivers
for the most part we were very young
Yet we came
We came from farms and cities
and small towns and mountains
From affluence and poverty, business
and labor, educated and simply literate
We came to save our country and our world
And we came if necessary to die
And so, many did die.
And others were forever maimed or scarred
We all knew this could happen yet we
came when our number came up we came
Or when our hearts told us this was
our job to do not someone else's
We came
The purr of bullets, the blast of shells,
the bombs, the close up faces of the enemy
The fear, the anger, when a friend fell,
the confusion the madness but
We came
We came, young scared and we stayed until the job was done
So many years ago this was but it doesn't seem so
Gathered again by number and unit and stories
We come to remember, to celebrate the courage of all of us
We Come
Fly the flags, remember the past, hug your buddies
Lift your head and your hearts and your souls and
Remember one more time that we came together to save the world
