Update: October 18, 2005 (Trek to Everest Base Camp)
Trek started in beginning of October, but was delayed for 3 days due to bad weather. Once weather subsided, we flew into Lukla and then trekked the 35 miles up to Gorak Shep, which is the last "village" (3 lodges) before going to Everest Base Camp. Along the way, Ama Dablam was a magnificent site -- see Sept 2005 webpage for photo of Ama Dablam. In less than two weeks, I will be joining an English expedition team to climb Ama Dablam. Excited! Now I'm back in Namche Bazaar, the major village in the Everest Khumbu Valley region. Relaxing here and then will head on up to altitude again for acclimitization. Everest Base Camp is around 17,500 ft. Ama Dablam is about 22,500 ft. Air is thin. Unfortunately, I can't post any photos now, so definitely do check back in a month or so when I am in Kathmandu, Nepal and able to upload photos.

Update: Photos (Trek to Everest Base Camp)

I spent 2 wks in Thailand feasting before going to Nepal to trek & climb. Here, I'm having dinner with two other travellers I had met in Bangkok.

I picked up Christi, Becky, and Marc in Bangkok and we headed over to Nepal. Here's Kathmandu's Thamel area. Crowded!

Here I am hanging out in Kathmandu waiting for the flight to Lukla, where we'd start the trek to Everest Base Camp.

Here's the plane to Lukla.

Here's a shote from the cockpit -- you can see the runway ahead as we're about to land.

Here's the landing. You can see that the runway angles downward!

Two hours out of Lukla, where we flew into, the trail makes it to Phakding. Here's the village of Phakding across the river (draining from Mt. Everest). The tents are from an expedition group.

Here's Christi (in red backpack) crossing the bridge over to Phakding.

I'm just hanging out in Namche Bazaar, Day 2 of our trek.

This is a photo of our group -- Becky, Yak, Yak, me, Christi, and Marc.

Christi, Becky, and Marc hiking from Namche Bazaar to Tengboche.

The red line shows the route to Tengboche (red circle).

Here I am in Tengboche. Everest on the left and Ama Dablam on the right. I'd climb Ama Dablam the following month -- see NOV 2005 link.
