Lesbianism or Spiritualism
Xena, the very name once inspired me with awe. This
strong willed single minded guilt ridden yet heroic
figure. She was someone determined to right the
wrongs she had committed in her still young life. I
have watched the show from day one episode one. I
know as much about the show as any other Xenite out
there. I have purchased all of her magazines and as
many related articles as I could find. I have tried
to look over the subtext of the show and the
implications involving its two main chacacters. I
have tried to rationalize away their closeness as
sisterly. I winced every time they kissed or embraced
or touched one another in an intimate way. Everytime
they looked deeply into each others eyes and openly
proclaimed thier "feelings" for one another. I
defended her to others and turned a blind eye. Now as
I see the fourth season coming around I am not
impressed with the quality of the programing. In
"Paradise Found" all I saw were two women massaging
each other taking baths in the same hot tub and Xena
going so far as to even rub Gabrielle's butt. I have
seen such cheap ratings ploys from Ellen Degeneres
and Roseanne Barr and even during the last season of
Married with Children. These shows were all taken off
the air shortly after. This whole India storyline is
all wrong for the show anyway. It comes dangerously
close to being out and out sacrilege. I beleive the
content of the story line is just close enough to
christianity to fool those to young or impressionable
to know the difference. I hope that Lucy Lawless the
cast writers directors etc. will be able one day to
find their way back to what made the show great.
Performances like I have seen in "Maternal Instincts"
and Bittersuite" When you have talent and passion
fake spiritualism and Lesbianism are not required.
