ASKING ME TO CHOOSE
Written by: Erin M. Blair
--------------------------------------
Dear Scully,
We lost the X-Files for the third time,
and now, I fear I've lost you. I can't
lose you.
Not after all we've been through for the past
five years of our partnership. I know I've
hurt you, and I want to make things right.
How can I make things right, Scully?
Please tell me. I need to know.
You told me I have to choose. What do
you want me to choose? What do I have to make
a choice?
Is it between Diana and you? Or the X-Files
and you? It's not about the X-Files... I know
that, but I want you to know it's not
only my quest for the truth, it's ours. It
has been that way for a long time.
If it's about Diana, I told you about her.
Remember? We're history. Finished. She got a
transfer to Europe, and I haven't seen her for
a long time.
That is, until she burst into our lives. Scully, why
would I go with someone whose so much like me?
If I wanted to, I would be talking to myself.
I don't want people to agree with me all the time.
Life isn't a Utopia. "Yes, Mulder, I agree
with what you said."
Where's the conflict? Where's the exchanging of
ideas? We *are* like that. We have the conflict
of differing opinions and we have the exchanging
of ideas. I've come to care about our own opinions
and ideas. You make me think about my own beliefs,
and you don't know how much I like hearing your
scientific theories.
I don't want Diana.
I want you, Scully. That's right, I want you.
Do you remember what I told you out in the hallway
shortly before you were stung? Of course you do.
What I said, that you make me feel whole is true.
You do make feel like a whole person.
Do you know how much I trust you? I don't know if
you know how much I truly trust you. I do. What I
said to you was wrong, Scully. I *do* trust you.
We're going to get past this. I know we are. The
truth will always save the day, and I know this letter
will save us.
It has to.
Yours,
Mulder

Author's Note: The premiere brought me
several new fresh ideas, but then again,
I always have ideas when I watch the X-Files.
Anyway, what was wrong with Mulder and Scully
at the end of the episode? Perhaps, this
little story will help. Thanks to everyone who
had beta read this story.
