A LITTLE TWIST OF ONE BREATH
Written by: Erin M. Blair

As I was tending to my identical twin daughters, Emily and Dana, I received a call from the hospital. My sister, Melissa, has been returned from her "abduction", but she's in a coma...

I couldn't believe that my New Age spouting sister is laying in a coma on a hospital bed, and there's nothing that I can do about it. I feel so helpless. I want to cry in Mulder's shoulders, but I can't. Nothing seems to come out.

I have always been the strong one. I can fight my emotions. We were all raised that way in the Scully household, and we're always so calm.

Usually, I'm so calm. So much in control. How come I'm not?

I know why.

Melissa's dying...

"Scully?"

"Mulder," I replied, as I turned towards my husband. I got up from the chair, and he took me into his arms. "She still hasn't woken up..."

"She will," Mulder said, assuringly. "I'm sure she'll be all right..." He paused. "Give her a reason to live."

"Mulder, have you found out anything...?" I asked, as I trailed off. I didn't want to say "abduction" and he knew it.

"I know that you don't want to say 'abduction', Scully."

"You know that I don't believe in that stuff, Mulder," I replied, as I gave him a small, sad smile. "I feel so helpless... I don't know what to do for Missy." I turned around in his arms, and I could see Melissa being hooked up to the life support apparatus clinging to life from whatever they had done to her. What had they done to her?

I have to find out...

"I know," Mulder said, with a sigh. "Scully, we'll do everything to help her..."

"I know that, Mulder. I know that we'll find out the truth. Can I be alone for a moment?"

Mulder nodded. "I'll be in the waiting room with our girls. Your Mom's with them now...and I'm sure that she wants to see Melissa."

"It won't take that long," I said, assuringly. "I promise." I watched him walk out of the room, and I was afraid that the tears would fall down my cheeks. I didn't want Mulder to see me break down. That's why I wanted him to leave me alone with Missy for awhile.

I needed to be strong. I needed to think for a moment. I want to reach her. The last thing for Missy to see was my tears.

I have to be strong.

As a medical doctor, I believe in science. My science will help Missy to get better, but I do know that her beliefs will help too.

"Melissa, I know that you're in a dark place. Somehow, your voice had told me that. I don't know how, but I guess Mulder's starting to rub off me." I took a deep breath, and then, I continued. "Missy, I know that you always had the strength of your beliefs. I hope that you can find your way out." As I said this, I waited. I don't know for how long, but I saw her squeeze my hand with gentle pressure to know that she's alive. "Missy?"

"Dana?" Melissa asked, in a weak voice.

"I'm here."

"Where am I?"

"You're at Northeast Georgetown Medical Center," I said, with relief in my tone of voice.

"Why?"

"You were in a coma for a week. We don't know why," I answered, as I paused to see her reaction. I could tell that Melissa was worried about her missing time. "Missy?" I took out her charm necklace that I had been carrying since she was taken. "I have something for you..." I handed the necklace to her, and she smiled at me.

"You don't know how much this means to me..."

"I think I do."

Melissa looked at me, and I could see there was something she was trying to figure out. "What's wrong, Melissa?"

"I don't remember anything after Duane Barry abducted me. It frustrates me. I'm sorry, Dana."

"That's all right, Melissa."

I did care about what happened to her, but I'm so happy Melissa's awake that none of this matters to me.

End of Story

Author's Note: Some of my readers had ask me if "Little Twist of Three" was a series. It's not really a series as I had no intention in doing so. However, people were wondering if Melissa Scully would ever be reunited with her sister so here it is, the sequel!! =) This is a follow up to "Little Twist of Three".
