The Truth!

We Want The Truth!

Hi and welcome to my page of rumors and lies about the Monkees. I'm here to make the truth known about the most heard Monkee rumors. Ok, let's start with the biggie:

RUMOR: The Monkees did not play their own instruments.
TRUTH: Although at first they weren't allowed to, they eventually fought for it. But even on the first album, Peter Tork played fourth chair guitar on Papa Gene's Blues. When the music supervisor Don Kirshner was fired for releasing a single he wasn't supposed to, they gained their ability to play the instruments. On Headquarters, it is the Monkees themselves playing everything on there, except for the French Horn, cello, and violins on "Shades of Gray."

RUMOR: Mike Nesmith wants nothing to do with the Monkees now that he is rich from his mother's inheritance.
TRUTH: True, Nez is rich from that, but not from that alone, and he does want part of the Monkees. In the 80's, when they called him about a reunion tour, he said yes, and then something else came up. He always had some other job he had to do. But now, he was with them in doing their latest album Justus, he worte, directed, and starred in their ABC tv special, he was in the documentary, he did a tour with them throughout Europe, and he is currently working on their movie.

RUMOR: The Monkees were innocent little kiddy people.
TRUTH: Sad to say, no they weren't. Unknown to the public, they would sometimes go in a back room built specially for them and smoke marijuana. Peter was put in prison for a few month on drug possesion. (This was after the Monkees.) They've learned their lesson and they don't do drugs now to my knowledge though.

RUMOR: Peter dated Mama Cass of The Mamas and the Papas.
TRUTH: Peter dated Mama Cass's sister, Leah Cohen, but never Mama Cass.

RUMOR: Peter dated Reine Stewart, actor Jimmy Stewart's daughter.
TRUTH: Although Peter did date Reine Stewart, she is not Jimmy Stewart's daughter. This rumor was started by a book about the Monkees published in the 80's.

RUMOR: Charles Manson auditioned for the Monkees.
TRUTH: This is a very famous rumor, but he never auditioned. He was in prison at this time. Many other soon to be famous people auditioned though, including Steve Stills of Crosby, Still, Nash, and Young.

Well, those are just some rumors to get us started. I'll be back with more as soon as I can think of them! If you have any rumors you'd like to share, feel free to email me and I'll get it up here! Meanwhile, here's a link that may help get the truth out about some rumors.
