Dr. David Hayward is the former associate director of cardiology at Stanford. He is now the head of cardiology at Pine Valley Hospital. He is also a medical consultant for "The Cutting Edge" on WRCW. He resides at The Valley Inn [room 906]. His blood type is A-B positive.
David first came to Pine Valley in the fall of 1997 (November 27, 1997) to give a lecture on cardiac care and to also win back his former girlfriend, Allie Doyle who was a doctor at Pine Valley Hospital. Allie didn't want to have anything to do with David since she was now involved with Dr. Joey (Jake) Martin. David tried to convince Allie that he changed from his playboy ways and he even asked Allie to marry him but, she turned him down. David couldn't take no for an answer so he resorted to blackmail to get what he wanted from her.
When Allie was a student at Stanford she told David her secret. She changed her college transcripts to make it appear that she attended a big name college when in reality she attended a small college so that she could attend Stanford Medical School. She was in love with David and she had no idea that he would use this information in the future to hurt her.
Since David couldn't win Allie's love he decided to destroy her boyfriend. David began to tamper with one of Jake's patients (Adam Chandler) in order to make Jake look like an incompentant doctor. David injected some bad medicine into Adam's IV bag. The medicine caused Adam's heart to beat faster and he almost died but, David came to Adam's room just in time with the antidote to reverse the affects. David told the hospital board that Jake gave Adam the wrong medicine and Jake was suspended from Pine Valley Hospital.
Jake got the help of his friends (Liza, Allie, and Stuart) to have David believe that Liza wanted Adam killed so she could run off with Jake. Of course David fell hook line and sinker for this plan since he knew this would be his one shot with Allie if Jake was going to be with Liza. David came to the Chandler mansion with the bad medication not knowing that there were hidden cameras in Adam's bedroom but, he refused to kill Adam (who was really Stuart in the bed pretending to be Adam) and he admitted on tape that he was the one who set up Jake at the hospital.
Allie and Jake finally had the amunition that they needed to get rid of David. David claimed that he worked a 40 hour shift and that was the reason why he gave Adam the wrong medication at the hospital. The board was going to overlook this error in judgment until Dr. Joseph Martin threatened to quit Pine Valley Hospital and the board decided to let Dr. Hayward go instead. David left Pine Valley in the spring of 1998 (March 3, 1998) but not before he hinted to Liza that he might just return for her someday.
David returned to Pine Valley in the summer of 1998 (July 8, 1998) but,this time his main reasons for being in Pine Valley was to capture the heart of Liza Colby Chandler.
David managed to patch things up between him and Liza. David suggested to Liza that she needs a medical consultant for one of her TV programs but, with him as a consultant. Liza liked the idea after she did some research that showed medical segments did great in the ratings. However, she didn't want David working at her station. After an unsuccessful tryout with Dr. Jake Martin, Liza decided to hire David after watching him do his tryout.
Now David was working at WRCW but, there was an obstacle in his way--Allie Doyle.
Allie told Jake that she destroyed the infamous video of Dr. David confessing his crimes but, in reality the tape was never destroyed. Allie was blackmailing David with the tape so she could have Jake believing that David was trying to win her back. Allie was scared that Jake was falling for Liza again and she needed David around so that she could appear helpless in Jake's eyes.
One day David caught Allie switching lab results (Liza's lab results) so that she could appear pregnant when in reality she wasn't pregnant. David told her that he would report her but, Allie finally told him that she still had the tape and that she would use it if David told on her.
Since David didn't like things hanging over his head which could land him in jail or even cause him to lose his medical license he decided to find the tape on his own. David got caught by Jake with the tape in his hand at Myrtle's boardinghouse and he finally told Jake what Allie was up to. Jake let David destroy the infamous tape since they had agreed a few months before that they would not use the tape unless it was necessary.
While trying to pursue Liza David had an affair with the very married Princess Gillian Andrassy Lavery.
Allie hinted to David that Adam and Liza had a lifelong bond that would tie them together forever and David finally added up all the pieces when he found out from others that Adam only cares about his children. Liza had asked Jake to donate his sperm so that she could have a baby. However, Adam had switched the sperm with help from Allie Doyle. And since Adam was caring way too much for Liza's unborn child David realized that Adam must have switched the sperm. David wanted Liza and he desperately wanted to prove to Liza that she was actually carrying Adam's baby and not Jake's.
David was able to get his job back at Pine Valley Hospital thanks to Palmer Cortlandt. Palmer wanted David to cure Dixie and he also wanted David to keep Dixie's medical condition private from the Martins. David went to New York City to care for Dixie on a regular basis until she finally returned to Pine Valley where he consults with her on an outpatient basis.
David's first plan to catch Adam didn't quite work out. David wanted to prove to Liza with records that Adam was the owner of the fertility clinic where she was artificially inseminated with the sperm. But, Adam had sold the clinic and made sure that there was not a paper trail that led back to him. Now David had to use his medical skills to prove to Liza that Adam is the father of her baby and not Jake.
David decided to change Liza's test results to make it appear that there was a problem with her baby so that she could take an amnio which would provide the DNA proof that he needed to prove his theory. Liza had to take an amnio which turned out okay for her since there was nothing wrong with her or her baby.
David got help from Kyle who works at Pine Valley Hospital. David told Kyle that he wanted to start this new research project involving amnio fluid samples. David really needed someone on the inside of the lab to give him access to Liza's amnio fluid samples so that he could compare her unborn child's DNA to Adam's. Since Kyle didn't know David's real motives he let David have access to the amnio samples--Liza's amnio samples. Now David finally had what he wanted.
David's affair with Gillian ended on a bad note. Gillian's husband, Ryan Lavery, was accused of rape and he needed bail money. Gillian couldn't wait for her cousin Dimitri or Hayley (Ryan's rich friend) to give her the bail money so she asked David for $50,000. But, David wouldn't give Gillian the money unless she would agree to have sex with him. Gillian decided to have sex with David for the money. Gillian returned David his money after Ryan made a deal with the district attorney that didn't require money for bail.
David used the second annual Crystal Ball to his advantage. He took a wine glass and he punctured a small hole into the glass. David then bribed a waiter for a tray of champagne where he switched the good glass for the bad glass. David then made a phony toast to Adam and Liza where he proclaimed that he was wrong about Liza being happy with Adam. Adam's glass shattered as he tapped his glass with David's glass. Adam's hand was bleeding and David dressed up the wounds but, he kept a sample of Adam's blood from a handkerchief. Now David finally had a sample of Adam's DNA to compare with the amnio fluid that he got from Liza.
One of the reasons why David left Stanford is because he didn't get a cardiac wing which is very expensive. Braden (with Palmer's approval) promised David a new cardiac wing if he "lied" to Dixie about her not getting better. David doesn't like to lie to his patients. He wants to give them all the very best care. Well, David didn't have to lie since Dixie was still sick. The only reason why David agreed to Braden's terms was because he knew the truth.
David was standing outside of Liza's office at WRCW with Adam inside when he finally got the DNA results. Now he has proof that Adam is the father of Liza's unborn baby.
Gillian comes to David again for money and she offers to have sex with him in exchange for the money. Gillian ask David for $100,000 so that she and Ryan can escape the country. David decides to give her the money but, he refuses to sleep with her. Gillian tells David where to drop off the money and she also tells him where she and Ryan are hiding out at. David decides to go to Ryan and Gillian's hideout to deliver the money in person. He tells Ryan that Gillian had sex with him on a previous occasion for bail money and he also gives Gillian the money she asked for. He leaves them in the cabin to discuss this while he calls the police.
David's world is turned upside down when his mother, Vanessa Bennett, comes to Pine Valley. David runs into his mother at a charity event. After the event, David's mother has a heart attack and he refuses to give her medical attention. David leaves as he hears Dr. Joe Martin coming to Vanessa's aid. Erica is determined to find out why David refused to treat Vanessa.
Erica goes to Dr. Joe Martin and she informs him that David refused medical care for Vanessa Bennett. David lies to Dr. Joe Martin and he tells him that he would have taken care of Ms. Bennett but, when he saw that Joe was on his way to the scene he decided to take an emergency page instead. Joe told Erica what David did to both Adam and Jake.
Joe informed Erica that there was nothing that he could so since it would be her word against David's. So, he decided to ask Ms. Bennett about what happened to her. Vanessa told Joe that nothing happened.
David went to Erica's office at Enchantment where he made sure that she understood that he didn't want her involved in his personal affairs. Erica decided to go to Adam for his help on David. Adam told Erica that Vanessa is David's mother and he also showed her an investigative file on David that had more questions than answers. In the file, it showed that David's father [Charles Hayward] died when he was twelve. And, it also showed that he went to a boarding school when he was in junior high and high school.
Vanessa thanks David for not attempting to save her life since she said the shock alone would have killed her.
David was prepared to tell Liza the truth at Marian and Stuart's wedding but, a snowstorm prevented him from telling his story. On his way to Pine Valley, David had an accident with an abandoned truck on the highway. David was not injured but, his passenger, Erica Kane, was hurt badly in this accident. David performed emergency surgery on Erica in the snowstorm. However, David couldn't do too much for her face.
David finally got a chance to tell Vanessa how he felt about the circumstances surrounding his father's death. He blamed Vanessa for driving his father [Charles Hayward] to commit suicide [he blew his brains out]. Charles cut Vanessa out of his well before he killed himself. He left David with a lot of money.
Erica blamed David for the accident and she also ordered him off her case.
Dr. Joe Martin as well as Jake, Liza and Adam found out that David took Liza's amnio fluid samples. David had a cover story set in place. David gave Joe a folder that showed he was using the amnio fluid samples to study creatinine concentration which can lead to abnormal development of fetalmuscle mass which in turn could create congenital heart defects. And he also told them that he was using Liza's sample as a control for the research. Joe was not happy with David since he didn't follow proper hospital procedures.
After a heated confrontation in his hotel suite, David finally told Adam that he knows the truth about him being the biological father of Liza's unborn child. David also tells Adam that he doesn't care for Liza and that he is only seeking revenge against her for what she did to him a year ago. Adam threatened to kill David. David informed Adam that he has letters in a safe deposit box that will go to his lawyer as well as letters in other places that will tell everyone that Adam killed him because he found out the truth about Adam being the biological father of Liza's unborn child.
David gave his attorney, Leslie Coulson, two letters to be added to his file--one for Derick Frye (Pine Valley Police Department) and the other one for Liza Colby. Leslie also turned out to be David's ex-lover.
David learned that the letters that he gave his attorney have been stolen. David told Adam and Barry that he has plenty more letters and the truth will come out. Liza finally decided to fire David from WRCW because she was tired of him always interfering in her personal life.
David followed Adam and Liza to the Sleepy Hollow Inn where he was going to finally tell Liza the truth about her baby. Adam begged David to let him be the one to tell her the truth. While Adam was trying to explain his story to her, Liza went into labor. Adam and Liza decided to ignore David's advice and they both left the inn only to find out that the bridge was washed out. Adam and Liza found shelter in Stuart's cabin. David found Liza in the cabin and he told her that he would help her. During the delivery David discovered that Liza's baby was breech. So he left the cabin to get his laptop computer and medical CD ROM which provided him the instructions on how to deliver a breech baby. David asked for Adam's help in delivering baby Colby. After several hours a healthy baby Colby was born. David let Adam cut baby Colby's umbilical cord. A grateful Adam thanked David but, David told Adam that he will get his revenge on him and Liza once Liza and Colby get a clean bill of health from the doctors at the Pine Valley Hospital.
