THE FINAL CHAPTER

Sonny stood outside Brenda’s door and debated on whether to knock or not. His concern for
Brenda’s safety finally forced him to make a move. A tousled Jax opened the door holding a still
sleeping Jared in one arm.

"Sonny? Can I help you?"

"Jax, we need to talk. It’s about Miranda."

Confused, Jax allowed Sonny to enter asking him to wait while he put Jared in his bed. He
returned, retrieved his shirt off the back of the chair and put it on.

"What’s this about, Sonny?"

Taking a deep breath, Sonny answered, "I think she may have gone over the edge, Jax. I know
that you don’t like me, and the feeling is mutual, but I am concerned about Brenda’s safety."

Before Jax could reply, Gladys entered the room from the kitchen.

"Mr. Jacks, dinner is almost ready."

Surprise and then anger registered on Sonny’s face, "That’s her!"

A scared Gladys began backing up, unsure of what was going to happen next.

Sonny turned to Jax, "I saw this woman at the hospital talking to Miranda when Brenda had
Jared. She knows Miranda."

"Gladys? What’s going on here? Do you know Miranda?" Jax had a host of questions for
Gladys, but he forced himself to move slowly. He didn’t want to upset Gladys so much that she
wouldn’t be able to answer him.

Gladys broke down and began crying, "I’m so sorry, Mr. Jacks. I told her I wouldn’t help her
anymore. Please forgive me."

Jax and Sonny led Gladys to the couch and calmed her down enough so that she could tell them
everything she knew about Miranda and her machinations. Jax was horrified at the lengths that
she had gone to trying to gain his love.

When Gladys had finished, Sonny filled him in on what he knew as well. A picture was forming
in Jax’s mind. He was able to see that Miranda was not operating on all cylinders. He made a
telephone call to Mac and asked him to join them.

"Mac’s on his way. I’ve got to call Brenda and tell her to be careful."

Sonny frowned, "Call her? Her car is outside, Jax. I thought she was here."

Before Jax could answer, a blood curdling scream erupted from the direction of their bedroom.
The hair on the back of Jax’s neck stood on end at the sound of that voice. It was Brenda! He
leapt to his feet as the sound of a gun shot reverberated through the house!

Jax and Sonny burst into the bedroom to find Brenda standing over a cowering Miranda, a gun
held shakily in her hand. Jax approached her and slid the gun from her grasp and handed it to
Sonny. He took Brenda into his arms, holding her tight against him.

Removing the clip from the gun, Sonny helped Miranda to her feet. She stood there, defeated.

"What happened?" Sonny eyed both women quickly, not seeing any injuries.

A muffled reply came from Brenda, her face still buried in Jax’s shirt, "She tried to kill me, that’s
what happened!" Brenda sounded so indignant that Jax couldn’t help but smile.

"Miranda, Mac is on his way. Gladys and Sonny have told me everything. It’s over."

Glaring at Miranda, Brenda asked Jax what he had found out. Jax took the time to explain to her
everything that he had learned. Brenda was furious. She couldn’t believe the attempts Miranda
had made on her life! She walked over to Miranda determination on her face. She pulled back
her arm, balled up her fist and landed it squarely on Miranda’s dropped jaw!

The force of her blow, sent Miranda reeling backwards and into Sonny’s arms.

"Ouch!" Brenda held her hand up and shook it, "That hurt!"

The sight of Brenda decking Miranda sent Jax into gales of laughter. He kissed her reddened
hand.

"She won’t be able to hurt us again, Brenda." He looked at Miranda with contempt as she began
to cry.

After Mac had taken Miranda and Gladys into custody and left, Jax joined Brenda and Sonny in
the den. He could tell by the serious look on Brenda’s face that she needed some time alone
with Sonny.

"Sonny, thank you for helping today. I owe you." Jax held out his hand to Sonny and Sonny
shook it.

"Now, if you’ll excuse me, I’m going to check on Jared. I can’t believe he slept through all of
this."

Brenda watched Jax go, grateful that he understood her need to talk to Sonny.

Sonny spoke first, "I’m sorry, Brenda. I’m sorry for all the horrible things that I’ve done to you in
the past. I know that saying those words is not enough, but it’s a beginning."

Holding up her hand, Brenda stopped Sonny’s speech, "It’s okay, Sonny. We’ve both said and
done a lot to hurt each other over the years. I don’t necessarily regret our past, I just don’t ever
want to repeat it."

"There’s no denying your love for Jax, just as their is no denying his love for you. All I want for
you now, Brenda, is your happiness. You have a home, a husband who loves you and a
beautiful son. I wish you all the best. You have my solemn promise that I will never try to
interfere in your life again."

Sonny held out his hand and Brenda took it and squeezed it tightly. He took one last, longing
look at her face and turned and walked away.

Sitting on the edge of the bed, bouncing Jared gently to keep him occupied, Jax looked
expectantly at Brenda when she came into the bedroom. She sat next to him on the bed and
smiled at her cooing son.

"It’s finally over, Jax. Miranda is out of our lives and Sonny will never interfere again." Brenda
sighed and stared soulfully at Jax. He kissed the tip of her nose and adjusted Jared in his other
arm so he could rest his free arm on Brenda’s shoulders.

"This is a new beginning, Brenda. As long as we stand united, nothing can come between us.
We’ll be together always."

Brenda looked at her husband and child with a love so deep, it was immeasurable. She
repeated Jax’s words softly, "Always!"
