The Substitute

Day 5

Buffy awoke the next morning with a smile as she remembered the night before. Angel was soooooo sweet. She hurriedly got dressed so she could be to school early. She might have a chance to visit him before school started.

From her closet she chose a simple black dress with thin starps, casual yet stylish. Pulling on her black boots, she checked her hair in the mirror and grimaced. That would need some fixing! Five minutes later she had brushed out the snarls and held back her bangs with two silver butterfly clips.

Once at school, she took the steps to the basement. As she entered the history classroom, she spotted Angel putting some books on the bookshelf. She closed the door quietly behind her and pulled down the shade.

Angel turned, startled, but smiled when he saw her.

"Hey, what are you doing here so early?" He set down the rest of the books and made his way to her across the room. They both took seats next to each other.

Buffy set her bag down. "I was bored and just stopped in to see what you did before classes."

Angel shrugged. "Straighten up, though I've been here since before sunrise. It can get pretty boring," he raised his eyes to her. "But I always have time for my favorite student."

Buffy shook her head. "I've never really been a teacher's pet before...."

Angel grinned. "That sounds promising to me......"

The shrill bell that always started the day interrupted the moment. Sighing heavily, Buffy rose and grabbed her backup. Angel also stood and leaned in for a kiss before she left. "I think I like teaching, very much," he told her softly, pushing away a stubborn strand of hair from her eyes.

"I know a lot of things you could teach me besides history..." she hinted with a grin, almost making Angel blush.

"I'm sure I could," he laughed and guided her by the small of her back to the door. "Now get to class, you've skipped anough already."

Buffy resisted sticking out her tongue. "Yeah, yeah." She closed the door gently behind her. Instead of going to class, she headed to the library. Giles would probably have twin cows if she didn't check in.

There wasn't anything interesting going on at school. It was a pretty dull day. She sighed as she made her way through the library's double doors. "Giles, hello?"

Giles emerged from his cage filled with books and noddded to her in response. "Yes, um, hello Buffy. Good of you to check in."

Buffy nodded. "I'm just being a careful slayer. So, what's the up?" she asked cheerily.

Giles sighed and shooks his head. "Apparently, nothing at all. But, this being Sunnydale, it's best to be on the guard."

Buffy nodded. "Have you seen Will and Xander yet? I didn't see them in the halls."

"No, they don't usually stop in here before classes. I suspect the y find the library dull and dreary."

"This place? Nooooooo," Buffy teased, but Giles didn't catch on.

"I know, this is ther perfect environment for learning and talking. Much better then that club all of you spend many hours at when you could be at home enjoying a good book."

Buffy stared blankly at him. "I better go now, see ya later Giles."

He nodded and continued to read is 'interesting' books.

Buffy almost gigled at the sight. Instead she headed into the halls to look for her two best buds. The first bell had rung about 3 minutes before, that meant two more minutes until the second, and then 5 more for the tardy bell. That gave her plenty of time.

She checked Xander's locker first, and was happy to find him, along with Cordelia, locked in an arguement.

"I will not have my boyfriend wearing THAT to The Bronze on a friday night!" Cordelia was shouting.

"What's wrong with my outfit? At least I don't look like I'm worth about ten cents!" Xander shot back.

"No, in that you would have to pay other people for them to take you."

"Why am I even going with you? You make me sick!"

"You disgust me!"

"Snob!"

"Geek!"

"Ice Queen!"

"Moron!"

"Are you feeling the passion?" Xander asked out of breath"

"Oh yeah," Cordy nodded and they both locked lips.

"Ummm, guys? People are staring!" Buffy called with amusement.

That at least got Cordelia's attention. "Oh, uh, nothing to see here!" A few people down the hall snickered as they shut their lockers.

"Hey, Buff, how are you this lovely morning?" Xander asked like nothing had happened.

"Oh, so-so. I visited Angel, then checked in at the library."

Cordelia spoke up, "Oh, Angel. What did you to talk about?"

Buffy grinned, sharing a knowing look with her new found friend. Xander starightened up and frowned.

"Hey, why are you two grinning? Guys? Come on, tell me!"

The two girls laughed at his sudden burst of interest. "Later, I'm gonna go find Will," Buffy said as she continued down the hall.

Willow was equally easy to find. She was also at her locker, and Oz had just left. "Hi Buffy!" she called in her always-excited tone.

"Hey Will, anything new going on?" She asked, leaning up against the locker close by.

Willow shrugged. "Just a date with Oz at The Bronze tonight. Hey, is Angel coming?"

Buffy shrugged. "Who knows, you know he hates dancing!"

They both laughed at the sound of Angel dancing to something with an actual beat to it. The few dances they had actually shared had been to slow and depressing songs.

"I'll have to ask him to come in history class."

The bell rang yet again, for the second time. Willow, who was always punctual, quickly said goodbye and ran off to her computer science class.

Buffy took her time and wandered to Geometry 2.

Later that Day, in history

Angel had chosen todays discussion to be about Irish history, since that was what he knew best. And it showed.

"In the 18th century, thelifestyles were different and the same in many ways. There were the gentlemen, the ladies, and a few (he paused) drunks around town."

Buffy listened to him talk, knowing that this was where he came from and how he lived. I tmight be the only time she would get to know what his choldhooc had been like.

After class, she waited until everyone had left when she approached his desk. He smiled making her heart speed up a few beats. "Hey Angel, guess what?"

He shrugged. "What do you want from me?"

Buffy rolled her eyes. "Nothing, I just want you to come to The Bronze with us tonight, that's all. It'll be fun. You've been teaching all week, and you need a nice break!"

How could he resist her pleading? He found himself agreeing to go before the entire idea had processed through his head.

"Great!" she exclaimed happily. She quickly kissed his cheek, when she heard a noise outside.

Hallway

Principal Snyder passed the open door of the history classroom, and thought he saw Buffy Summers kissing that new teacher again. He continued on,unconcerned until it registered with him. He paused in his steps.

Classroom

Buffy quickly hid behind Angels desk when she saw Snyder passing by. Angel just sat at his chair, slightly amused, and graded papers.

Hallway

Snyder walked a few steps backwards and peered into the room. Mr. Giles was sitting quietly at his desk grading papers. No stuudents around.

"Mr. Giles?" he called out.

Angel looked up, acting surprised. "Principal Snyder, Sir. May I help you?"

Sbyder glanced around the room again, confused. "No...nevermind."

He continued along his way shaking his head. That Summers girl was driving him crazy!

Classroom

Buffy giggled uncontrolably and Angel gave her a cross look. "Buffy, you're going to get us both in trouble!"

"I'm sorry, but it's just......twice now, he probably thinks he's going nuts!"

Angel gave a soft laugh at this. "Alright, now get to class. I'll see you tonight at 8 PM."

Buffy smiled and left the room.

The Bronze

Buffy and Xander danced to a fast song with a nice beat while waiting fot the others to arrive. Willow and Oz were off in a corner, catching up on serious smoochies, but Cordelia and Angel had yet to show.

Buffy smiled as the song ended, and one of her favorites began.

I would swallow my pride,
I would choke on the reigns,
But the lack thereof would
leave me empty inside.
I would swallow my doubt,
turn it inside out,
find nothing but faith in nothing,
wanna put my tender,
heart in a blender,
watch it spin round to
a beautiful oblivion,
rezendevous then
I'm through with you.

Xander started doing his 'spaz dance' as they all called it. It consisted of part of the macarana, electric slide, and YMCA.

I burn burn like a wicker cabinet.
Chalk white and oh so frail.
I see our time has gotten stale.
The tick-tock of the clock is plainful,
All sane and logical.
I wanna tear it off the wall.

I would swallow my pride,
I would choke on the reigns,
But the lack thereof would
leave me empty inside.
I would swallow my doubt,
turn it inside out,
find nothing but faith in nothing,
wanna put my tender,
heart in a blender,
watch it spin round to
a beautiful oblivion,
rezendevous then
I'm through with you.

So callous where's my mind's state,
But it's not my state of mind.
I'm not as ugly, sad as you.
Or am I oragami,
Fold it up and just pretend,
Demented as the motives in your head.

-- Eve 6, "Inside Out" (I know, these lyrics might be messed up, I was writing them from memory!)

Just then, Buffy noticed Angel enter through the door. Xander noticed Buffy's lack of interest in him, so he knew who was there before even turning around.

"Dead boy strikes again," he muttered before returning to his seat.

Buffy rolled her eyes behind Xander's back and headed towards her boyfriend. "Angel, hi!"

He smiled down at her. "Hey. Sorry I'm a little late, I had a few extra papers to grade."

They leaned in for a deep, passionate kiss. "No big deal. I can always wait for you," Buffy replied coyly as she led him to their table. Xander was still sitting there alone, still waiting for Cordelia.

"Where's Cordelia?" Angel asked him, causing a glare from Xander.

Buffy poke up, "She's running late again, probably wnats to make an entrance."

Angel nodded and scooted his chair closer to Buffy's. Across the room, he noticed Scott waving to him. He smiled and waved back. Scott had his arm around a brunette girl, her face hidden from view. Buffy noticed this, too. When the girl turned around, she noticed it was Amy.

"Wow, looks like Scott and Amy are a couple. And she dyed her hair," Buffy observed.

Xander looked in the direction she mentioned. "Oh yeah, old news."

Buffy looked at him narrowly. "Exactly how long have you known?"

He shrugged in response. "About, oh, I'd say 17.9 seconds."

Willow and Oz finally headed over them after detaching their lips from each other.

"Hey guys!" Will called cheerily, taking a seat between Buffy and Oz. "Where's Cordelia?"

This question caused a loud sigh from Xander. "She's late, probably broke her ankle on her heel, or something."

After about 20 more minutes of conversation, they were all a littel worried that Cordy hadn't shown. Xander went over to the payphone and dialed her house.

"I wonder where she is?" Willow asked.

"Could've forgotten," Oz calmly put in, in his quiet way.

Buffy, who was now sitting on Angel's lap, shook her head. "Cordelia miss a Bronze night? No way."

Angel wrapped his arms tighter around Buffy. "Maybe she ran into vampires...."

Willow's eyes grew wide. Just then, Xander made his way back to teh table, looking more than ticked.

"So what's up? Where is she?" Buffy asked.

He dropped into his seat. "She blew me off because she didn't like my sense of fashion, so can no longer be seen with me until I take a trip with her to the mall."

Everyone except for Xander started laughing, even Angel.

After a while, even Xander couldn't refuse the silliness of the entire ordeal and began to chuckle softly to himself.
