The Substitute

By: Jaide

Description: What happens when the school desperately needs a substitute history teacher? They call someone with a great knowledge of history, of course! But can Angel handle a class of highschoolers, including Buffy, Xander, Cordelia, Willow, Oz, and Larry for three weeks??

Disclaimer: I own Mr. Jenkins, his sister, Alice, and this story idea. Joss can have the rest.

Rated: G (Humerous)

Mr. Jenkins was a man of business, so was rarely ever absent. History was his passion, and he taught it well. He only wished his students thought so. He taught junior and senior European history each year at Sunnydale High, and was usually stuck with the below average groups. To make matters worse, his classroom was on the basement level. The school had run out of rooms, and his was the first one relocated. The room required allot of lighting because of the missing windows.

After 37 years of teaching, he needed a vacation. His sister, Alice Jenkins, lived in Hawaii and he'd been meaning to visit her for years. Now that her husband had passed away, it was time.

Now all he had to do was convince the nazi-like Principal Snyder that he needed time off. A month at least. Mr. Jenkins wasn't afriad of the man, he could handle him. After 10 minutes of arguing and reasoning, he left the office almost satisfied. He had 3 weeks off. Time to pack!!

Giles searched his office mailbox to see if anything was inside. Just some extra yellow hall pass slips, a notice about some fundraiser, and a personal note from Jenny Calendar about a date on Saturday evening. He prayed it didn't involve monster trucks.

"Mr. Giles!" came the horribly familiar voice behind him. Giles sighed and turned to face Pricipal Snyder.

"Just the man I was looking for. It seems we need a substitute history teacher for 3 weeks, and you are going to volunteer."

Giles was upset, to say the least. "Mr. Snyder, I must attend to the library, and with the new program..." he was cut off.

"What new program?" Snyder asked, annoyed.

Giles cleared his throat and closed his mail box. "The reading group for under-average students. It was required by the board and I'm to be on hand all day long in the library."

Snyder furrowed his brow. "But we need a sub! The district is coming off short handed this year, and there are 7 periods that need a teacher. I'm not going to do it!" he complained.

Giles thought for a moment. If he didn't do it, Snyder would certainly cut his pay, as he'd done so many times in the past. He'd also hear about it for weeks. Maybe he could find someone for the job.....

"Principal Snyder, perhaps I can find a qualified indivdual who can teach instead?" he spoke up, almost regretting it instantly.

"Yes! You do that, and you get a bonus this year," the principal was obviously coming to a better mood. "The classroom is located in the basement section of the school due to oevr crowding."

Giles snapped his head up. Basement meant no windows. No windows meant no sunlight. No sunlight meant no vampires dying. He knew the perfect person for the job!

"I have just the person, but I should speak with him first. He might not appeal to the idea."

Snyder frowned slightly. "You do that, but remember, if you can't find me a person, it'll show on your salary, significantly!" He turned his heel and walked into his office, slamming the door.

Giles sighed. This was not going to be easy!

Angel was awakened by the ringing of his phone. He sighed and grabbed it from the hook. "Yeah?" he said into it.

"Angel, this is Giles," he sounded very worried and Angel was immediately awakened.

"What? What's up? How's Buffy? Is she okay?" he drilled, hoping nothing was wrong with his girlfriend. He loved her so much, and would die if anything happened to her.

"Yes, yes, Buffy's fine. But I'm in a small situation."

Angel breathed a sigh of relief. "What is it?"

"Well, I need you to volunteer to do something for me here at school. You'll also be helping Buffy with her education, and you know how important that is..." he was babbling.

"What is it, Giles??" Angel asked.

"We need a substitute teacher."

Angel started laughing. "You want me to be a substitute teacher??"

Giles turned red on his end of the phone. "Yes!"

Angel stopped laughing. "You have got to be kidding."

Giles shook hi head even though Angel couldn't possibly see him. "No, I'm not. And Principal Snyder clearly stated that I was to find someone or I would be docked pay. There are no other teachers available."

"I don't know the first thing about teaching a class!" Angel argued.

"For God's sake, it wouldn't be hard! The subject is European History, you would teach three 40 minute classes a day for three weeks. One of those classes includes Buffy and her friends. The room is located in the basement due to lack of space so no windows can harm you. You'll be keeping me employed, earning extra money for yourself, and be able to see Buffy more often. Does that sound too bad?"

Angel was starting to appeal to the idea. He'd be safe from the sun, he'd earn some money, he'd be helping Giles, and most of all, he'd see Buffy. "Are you sure there's no one else you can find?"

Giles sighed. "Positive. Please do this!"

Angel grinned. "Anything to help a friend, but, exactly how much would I be payed?"

Giles told him the sum. "Hmm, that sounds kind of low."

Giles almost scremed. The damned vampire was messing with his head! He gritted his teeth. "That's the best we can do."

"I don't know..."

Giles gave up. "If you work for that, I can give you at least three ways for you to get Buffy alone on breaks without causing suspicion, everyday."

Angel perked at this. "Deal."
