HISTORY OF COMMUNICATION INQUIRY

(cont.)

Development of the Communication Discipline

1800s

-         Colleges moved from a liberal tradition of education that emphasized generalized knowledge to a disciplinary model of education that emphasized specialized knowledge within specific academic disciplines.

-         Specialized departments were established in colleges to represent such different academic disciplines as English, history , and biology

Until the early 1900s, there were no departments of communication within colleges because communication was not yet an established discipline. Instead, communication was viewed s an important part of many different disciplines rather than a specific field of inquiry.

Early 1900s

-         Speech and journalism scholars began breaking away to form their own departments
