COMMUNICATION RESEARCH IN THE PHILIPPINES

(cont.)

The Seventies

Beginning in the’70s, studies were focused in these areas:

-         Communication support to development programs and projects

-         Cooperative, multi-national studies

-         Policy research for institutional development and support

-         Multi-sectoral and multi-disciplinary studies

Trends and Developments

A second look at the communication studies done in the ‘60s and ‘70s

SCOPE

In coverage, communication studies in the Philippines are shifting back to where they started. The early studies were nationwide in scope; the succeeding ones became narrower.

RESPONDENTS

Majority of the research are expected to have rural respondents.

MANPOWER RESOURCE

The main sources of research manpower are the schools offering communication degrees.

Government information agencies in the ‘70s increased in their research capability.

METHOD OF ANALYSIS

Commonly used in the communication studies (statistical methods)

-         Percentage and some measures of central tendency

-         Chi-square

-         ANOVA (Analysis of Variance)

REPORTING

Late reporting of results became a hindrance in making research

One noteworthy development in reporting communication studies is the printing of the monograph by UP-IMC, UP Community Development Research Council and the Department of Agriculture

OTHER DEVELOPMENTS

A growing divergence is now evident between communication research in the Philippines and more advanced countries.

Points of divergence:

  1. Research orientation- Developed countries is becoming theory-oriented; developing countries like Philippines are more problem-oriented.
  2.  Research Design- Developed countries are inclined towards laboratory experiment; Philippines is towards action research or operations studies.
