14 August 1995, 250 tonne steel loading ramp

A 250 tonne steel loading ramp was installed at berth no. 3 at the Euro Port of Rosslare, on the 14 August 1995, this is part of the continuing EU-asssited development of Rosslare Euro Port. The ramp, went into operational in October 1995. The steel linkspan was fabricated by Thompsons of Carlow - Ireland, in their workshop and assembled and painted on the reclaimed land on the western side of the Harbour. The task to move this huge steel-linkspan over to No.3 Ramp at the other side of the Harbour was left to the Mersy Mammoth, a 250 tonne capacity floating crane operated by the Mersey Port and Docks. The first operation involed carrying a support beam to be placed under the intended position of the linkspan. This beam was 27.5m long, 2.14m high and weighed in excess of 60 tonnes. With the beam in place, the huge floating crane lifted the linkspan off the reclaimed land and moved across the Harbour under its own power, with the linkspan suspended from its jib. The Operation was completed with apparent ease in four and a half hours, well within the time allocated. This new linkspan have been designed so that another deck can be added thus allowing for faster off loading of Ships in the Port.
