Emma

As I write this, I am adjusting to life without my cat, Emma. Sadly, Emma left my side on February 22, 2008. She is survived by her sister, Zoe, who is also learning to adjust without her sister roaming the same house as her.

I find myself remembering all the wonderful things about her. She was the one who always met me at the door. While it might have taken some time, Emma was the first one who would greet strangers. She would always amaze me when I'd look and there she'd be atop some bookcase. As a kitten, she was facinated by football and basketball on the big screen TV. It was because of Emma that I got a bird feeder and placed it outside the window she loved to watch the world go by. Of course, when the squirrels started to climb the window screens it was time for the bird feeder to go. Thankfully, Emma, found excitement in the bird bath and would watch for hours while drifting in and out of sleep.

She took on the adventures of my life. I remember the night we left Los Gatos and headed to Burbank. Emma and Zoe rode in their individual carriers in the backseat of my Chrysler LeBaron and headed down the I-5. And of course, when we moved into our current house, I was thrilled to see a floor to ceiling scratching post. While Zoe climbs the post with ease, I think Emma secretly enjoyed her time playing on the post.

Her health took a turn for the worse in the final weeks of her life. She was fortunate enough to have an amazing vet (Dr. Hare). She was a fantastic friend and will be missed. I still find myself looking around for her and so is Zoe. But I've got a unique way to remember her and every time I look at it, I can't help but smile and I think I can even hear her "talking" to me in her own way.
