Van Buren was accosted at an ATM by two boys in an attempted robbery. She shot them, killing one and wounding the other, who was eventually caught.
One of her sons was caught tagging a truck.
Van Buren took a test for promotion, and got the same score as a white woman, of equal rank but less experience; the other woman was promoted, and Van Buren filed suit against the Department.
Lt. Van Buren is played by S. Epatha Merkerson.
