There are Pretenders among us.

Genuises with the ability to become anyone they want to be.

In 1963, a corporation known as the Centre isolated a young Pretender named Jarod and exploited his genius for their research.

Then one day, their Pretender ran away...

This one-hour suspense series, now in its fourth season, stars Michael T. Weiss ("Jeffrey") as Jarod, a genius whose exceptional intelligence allows him to master virtually any profession. In addition to being the top-rated Saturday drama among male viewers 18-34 since its 1996 premiere, The Pretender became the top-rated Saturday drama in adults 18-34 for the first time last season.

As a "pretender," Jarod uses his skills for his unique brand of eye for an eye justice - while being stalked by agents of a clandestine corporation known as the Centre. Taken from his parents as a child prodigy in the early 1960s, Jarod spent decades isolated under the caring instruction of Sydney (Patrick Bauchau, Clear and Present Danger), a psychiatrist at the Centre - a think-tank that sold the services of Jarod's computerlike mind to the highest bidder. As an adult, Jarod fled the Centre, and now uses his genius ability to master any subject, enabling him to assume various identities, such as a doctor, an airline pilot or a race car driver.

Meanwhile, he continues to elude the Centre's alluring, single-minded Miss Parker (Andrea Parker, NBC's ER), who, with the assistance of the Centre's computer genius, Broots (Jon Gries, Twin Falls, Idaho), is desperately trying to bring Jarod back. Always one step ahead of the Centre, Jarod travels across the country seeking out people to help, all the time trying to discover the truth behind his own identity and the dark secrets hidden within the Centre.

"Like all of us, Jarod is still searching for who he is and how he fits into this crazy world," says executive producer/creator Steven Long Mitchell.

"At the heart of his character, Jarod is a man searching for truth, in his own life and in the world around him, but through the eyes and heart of someone who is still quite naïve and childlike in many ways," says fellow executive producer/creator Craig W. Van Sickle.

The Pretender is a production of NBC Studios and 20th Century Fox Television. Mitchell, Van Sickle and Tommy Thompson are executive producers.
