Two Hearts Apart

I stand by my window,
and watch you disappear back into the night,
carrying my heart away with you.
You seem oblivious to the treasure you hold
    between your gloved hands,
that which I give freely, but you never want to receive.
I long to chase after you,
protect you from the harm that stalks you,
the harm you run towards to vanquish.
To me your are as fragile as glass.
And yet it is your strength I love,
how you give always to others,
heedless of how it drains you to your own needs.
But why is it that I
who may need your gifts above all others,
alone never seem to be party to them, to cherish them as I alone can?
I know that we belong together,
sometimes in the day I feel you as close as my skin,
though well I know you are a creature of the night, too delicate to face the burning sun.
Fly safely, my love, fight the dangers only you know, and do not break my heart with your fall.

I leap from your windowsill,
forsaking the warmth of your home for the coldness of the night,
lest I grow too comfortable and lose forever the will to leave.
All that I can do,
as I begin my endless vigil of the night,
is leave my heart behind in your light, where I know it will be safe.
To you alone I trust it
that which I least of all deserve to feel its radiance of,
and yet beyond all comprehension find myself possessing.
But you can care for it as it deserves.
You, who are everything I am not,
everything I can never be, as tempting as it is to me,
human and gentle above all others, while I am a creature made to destroy.
I watch you closely,
drinking in every precious sight of a life I was denied at birth,
everything that I could take for a while, but only damage forevermore with my touch.
I long to tell you the truth,
unburden my soul to your waiting, trusting ears,
but I fear your repulsion at my life of lies more than the weapons of my enemy.
All I can give you is my heart, so that with you my beginnings of humanity may at least live on.
