The Mission Basilica of San Diego was the first mission founded by Blessed Junipero Serra on July 16, 1769.  It is currently an operating parish of the Diocese of San Diego. The daily Mass schedule and more information can be found on their website.
Father Luis Jayme was in good standing with the Native Americans until a few leaders spread rumors and incited a riot.  They attacked and looted the mission on November 4, 1775, killing Fr. Jayme and buring the church to the ground.  Fr. Jayme was the first martyr of California.

THE JUNIPERO SERRA MUSEUM at Presidio Park

The San Diego Mission was originally founded on a hill overlooking the bay.  Unfortunately, because of a lack of resources and close proximity to the soldiers of the presidio, the friars moved the mission six miles inland to its current location.  A historical museum named in honor of Junipero Serra currently resides at the site where the mission was originally founded.
