Getting there can be the worst part of any journey for some people. Those who suffer from motion sickness find trips in cars, trains, boats or airplanes miserable.
Doctors claim motion sickness occurs when the body, inner ear and eyes all send different signals to the brain. The inner ear senses motion, but the body is sitting still and the eyes see only the inside of the vehicle. The brain becomes confused by the mixed signals, and the result is nausea and dizziness.
If you get motion sickness regularly, there are over-the-counter medications available to help ease the symptoms. If it's just something that happens once in a while, put down your book and look out the window when you start to feel nauseated, or, if you can, have the driver stop the car, then lie down for a little while until you're no longer dizzy. If the symptoms are particularly severe, to the point they interfere with your ability to work or enjoy your ordinary activities, consult your doctor. There are some medical conditions affecting the inner ear that can cause symptoms of motion sickness.
