St. Louis #1 Chapter Barbershop Chorus

ST.LOUIS #1 CHAPTER
of the
BARBERSHOP QUARTET HARMONY SOCIETY

What is "Barbershop Harmony"?

Definition:  Four-part, unaccompanied, close-harmony singing, with melody in the second voice, called the “lead.” Tenor (counter-tenor voice) harmonizes above the lead singer; bass sings the lowest harmonizing notes, and the baritone provides in-between notes, to form consonant, pleasing chords. Barbershop is a “melting pot” product of African-American musical devices, European hymn-singing culture, and an American tradition of recreational music. Melodies are in the vocal and skill range of the average singer, with lyrical emphasis on simple, heartfelt emotions.

4-Part Barbershop Harmony
in Hillsboro, Missouri

At 7:30PM sharp, every Tuesday evening in the perfectly designed chorus rehearsal room of Jefferson College on Highway 21 in Hillsboro, MO, The Spirit of St. Louis Chorus takes a trip back in time when hair cuts were a quarter, the well dressed man wore a vest, and the music was sung with gusto in four part harmony.
