Band Parent Central
July/August 1997 Newsletter

What's new in this issue:

President's Corner - Jan Gillberg

It is my pleasure to warmly welcome all Freshmen and new MRD members and their families on behalf of the Band Parents Association.  We are delighted to see our music family grow!

I also want to extend our best wishes to all our departing Seniors.  They were Freshmen when Mr. Kenny began at HCRHS, so they are the first class to have worked with him for four years.  You will be gone, but not forgotten!  Check out where they are are headed off to here.

The Band Parent Association has been an integral part of the band's performances.  We support the band through fundraising, chaperoning, providing food, moving equipment, and just about anything else that Mr. Kenny asks for!  Patrick Littel has been the BPA President for the last year.  I would like to thank him for his vision and organizational skills.  His vision created an evening called "Music and Mayhem" (heavy on the music and mayhem).  It was a hit both financially and artistically.  He also got us started on creating a band cookbook, and not to mention his culinary skills for many events.  Patrick, you handed over a well-oiled machine.  Thank you again.

Fundraising Information

Fundraising is an integral part of the Marching Red Devils and the BPA.  We are a non-profit organization that helps fund projects and materials not covered by normal, budgetary monies.  All student members of the MRD will be asked to help with fundraising.  This year our efforts were shown in underwriting the cost of the trip to the Outback Bowl in Florida during Christmas Break 1996-1997, and for five, three- hundred dollar scholarships to graduating seniors, as well as  hosting the College of New Jersey's Wind Ensemble trip and program with the HCRHS Wind Ensemble.

The competition funds from last year allowed us to pay for a drum-line instructor for the 1997-1998 season.  For the first time, the BPA is also underwriting the cost of the Band Leadership Training for the student leaders.  Trips are not covered by the budget, and with fundraising, and with fundraising available to all students, the cost of trips comes down considerably.

Vice-president Sandy Quairoli will explain more fully the fundraising process at the August BPA meeting.  Our tentative schedule is as follows:

September: Pizza Kits
October: Candles
November: Music & Mayhem / Fruit Sales
January: Ticket Sales for the BPA Dance in February
February: Candy Sales
March/April: Pizza Kits
May: Annual MRD Car Wash / Teen Arts Food Stand

We also have an ongoing fundraiser that is available.  Do you buy food at a supermarket?  Everyone has to, so we have a PAINLESS way to fund raise.  For every $100 in Shop Rite Certificates you purchase from the BPA, $5 is deposited in your band member's fundraising account.  These certificates are used just like cash.  The bottom line - it costs you nothing, and gets you $5 in return.  Janet Williams is chairing this committee.  An order form was mailed out in the newsletter, as well as deadlines for placing orders.  If you have any questions, she can be reached at 908 - 788 - 2898.

2nd Annual CMBC Competition @ HCRHS

Following the success of last year's competition, the tradition will be continued again this year on October 18th, starting at 6:30 PM.  Last year saw the return of a competition at Central after many years of absence, and we saw six bands turn out to compete.  This year, the number has doubled to twelve!  As the hosts of this event, we are responsible for every aspect of running the evening -- parking, guiding, feeding, security, and physical support.  Last year we had just about every band parent involved, whether a member of the BPA or not.  We hope to have that same commitment again this year.

What do you and your child get out of this?  Your student has the pleasure of knowing that their parents stand behind their efforts to succeed in this special part of their lives.  You get the added bonus of helping your student prepare for the final CMBC Competition on Saturday, November 8th.

Diane Duquette is chairing this event again for us, and you can reach her at 908 - 534 - 9182, or call Jan Gillberg at 908 - 782 - 2653.  You do not have to have any particular skills, except the wish to help.  Please call as soon as you receive the newsletter in the mail so we can assign you to a committee.  If every band has an average of seventy with a support of staff and some proud parents in tow, we will need to guide and feed about 1500 people!!!  We should be able to make a healthy profit this year to help fund the other projects lined up during the year.

The MRD Cookbook

Last year, we tried to publish a cookbook of band family recipes for fun.  We ran into some problems, but are getting closer to publication.  Since we now have new members, we would like to give everyone a chance to become part of this historic work of art.  If you are new, we'd love to have as many wonderful family recipes as you can spare.  Or, if you never got around to sending some in last year, here's your chance!  The more recipes we have, the better the cookbook will be.  Even if you contributed last year, send in some more.  Please do this quickly as possible, preferably by the end of September.  Remember: an army and the Marching Red Devils don't function on an empty stomach.  Any questions, please call Betty Reilly @ 908 - 782 - 5361.

A word from J. Patrick Littel

I want to thank Jan Gillberg for asking me to continue writing the newsletter for the BPA.  Along with many of you, it has always been my family's link to the band and music department.  The newsletter is funded by your yearly dues, and with the amount of materials that we send out to you, the membership price really becomes a bargain.  It has saved us many a time when we would otherwise be unaware of the opportunities we have to watch our students perform.  It also creates a common link for us all, and I can truly say that I have made several wonderful friends through the BPA.  Nisha and I spent two days at the Rowan University Parent's Orientation while our son Bryan got a glimpse of college life with the rest of the freshmen class, and we had the pleasure of being with Doreen and Larry Jamieson, another BPA family, as their daughter Sarah is also attending Rowan.  It made for a very nice time for us all.  We all found out, however, that Freshman weekend is the weekend of our Competition.  We all have jobs at the competition, and Bryan seemed relieved that we would be staying home (someday, he'll miss us)....
In any event, please seriously consider joining the BPA.  It is money well spent, and I guarantee that you will have a great time getting to know everyone.  Enjoy the rest of the summer; it seems that once September gets here we are all at a fast run, and the rest of the year we seem to be trying to catch up.  See you at the August meeting!
