We all know there are some contests where the scores have been traditionally high. Corps that score a 60+ there first time out are spending weeks to get back over that 60 mark.
Have anyone considered normalizing scores. Although most corps trave somewhat in blocks, we do have variations in performing schedules. To avoid getting anyone upset by using an inaccurate example I will use some very old corps names in the example belo
. (I don't have a good base of scores for this years corps)
Ex. The Seneca Optimists that have a high score of 72.5 have not compared with Blue Rock that has a high score of 61.5.
However both corps have compared against the Black Knights.
When the Optimists compared against the Knights, the Knights received a 59.5 and the Optimists received a 49.5.
When Blue Rock compared against the Knights, the Knights received a 60.5 and Blue Rock received a 61.00
Hence the the Optimists' and Blue Rock's scores can be normalized relative to the Knights score After normalizing the three corps scores we would see the more realistic corps standings would be in order Blue Rock, The Black Knights and The Seneca Optimist
. Where simply using the high scores would lead you to believe the Optimists are way ahead of the other two corps. You could also attempt to use a factor to adjust for constant improvement over time.
Although this would be a monumental task, It would have some value if you believe in the competitive aspect of the activity and place stock in scores.. It does take into consideration that the scale that corps are judged with differ with respect to the j
dges at each show. It does not take improvement of the individual performance over time. Although it does have errors it would be much more valuable than a list of irrelevant encapsulated and subject numbers that can't be compared.
