Theodore van Houten, musicologist
Box 1
Haamstede
Nl-4328 ZG Netherlands
Haamstede, 22 October 2000
Dear Sir,
I was a trainee at the Gelders Orkest, Arnhem, in the 1973-74 season, when
at a concert I discovered the origins of Elgar's Enigma Theme: the refrain
of Rule Brittannia! I wrote about it to the Elgar Society. Moreover, my
article on the subject was published in a highly esteemed musicological
journal: Music Review (Vol. 37-ii, May 1976).
There was some scepticism. Jerrold Northrop Moore told me that '...it is
certainly the best soloution of its kind' but he added that - in his view -
the hidden truth behind the 'enigma' was '...Elgar's secret attraction to
men'.
I have heard many strange stories and suggestions since the 1970's. What
baffles me most is the bigoted persistence of those trying to stuff Mozart
themes or Auld Lang Syne (idea or tune) into Elgar's puzzle. So I'll briefly
explain it once more:
The score says 'Dedicated to my friends pictured within'. The variations all
represent 'friends'. Ergo: we have to guess who is 'pictured within' the
Enigma. This could have been a real person, for instance Elgar's daughter
(why is she no 'variationee'?). But it had to be somebody known to
everybody. So it could have been Queen Victoria, Giuseppe Verdi, or Little
Titch. Elgar thought that 'everybody' would guess immediately at the
premiere (note that the premiere concert on 19 June 1899 was concluded with
A. Mackenzie's 'Britannia Overture'!). This suggests that the 'friend
pictured within' could very well be a religious, mythological or symbolic
'person'. Elgar's note that '...the pricipal Theme never appears .... and
the chief character is never on the stage' was a cryptogram. The 'theme' is:
never. Elgar thought that anybody would understand that 'Britannia' was the
'friend pictured within', and that 'never, never', the falling thirds from
the chorus of Rule Britannia! were the 'principal Theme'. He underlined his
patriotism with another symbol for British: John Bull, with bulldog an'all,
in the G.R.S.Variation. As Elgar explained in his notes G.R.S. was
'...organist of Hereford Cathedral'. Another John Bull, the famous composer,
had been 'organist of Hereford Cathedral' (since 1582). Thus, Elgar has
hidden three John Bulls in this short bulldog variation: the
organist-composer, his friend Sinclair and Dan, and the symbol of Britain's
steadiness!
And that's all there is to the 'Enigma'.
However, in The International Journal of Musicology (Vol. 7, 1998, p. 241
ff.) D.N. Leeson suggested that '...identification of that tune [related
to the Enigma theme] has been '...a cottage industry for almost a century'
(note 5, p. 242). The point is that not only Mr. Leeson, but all the other
'solvers' as well had hold of the wrong end of the stick. Whoever (still)
wants to 'solve' Elgar's Enigma should try to identify the friend 'pictured
within' the original theme.
Sincerely,
Theodore van Houten

Hello!
I am in the Indianapolis Symphonic Choir in
Indianapolis, Indiana. This weekend we are
performing Elgar's "The Dream of Gerontius" with
the Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra. We're
rehearsing nightly this week. What a beautiful
piece! And the soloists are great.
However, I don't always understand what the text
means -- yes! even though it's in English. So I'm
searching around the Internet to see who exactly
supplied the text and see if I can find some
commentary, so I know what I'm singing about
throughout the piece. On the CD I have it just
says, "From the Novello edition of The Dream of
Gerontius," and it says, "... the words of
Newman's poem ..." Do you think you can help me
out? Do you know where else I can check online?
Thank you!

What an excellent site! In answer to one of the questions below, I don't think there are many Elgars about around here either. Looking in the phonebook there are only 2 or 3 and this is in the county where Elgar lived! There are, however various places an
businesses named after the great man. However, I'm not sure if he'd be flattered by some of them! EG: They demolished his last home and put some big ugly red brick flats onto the site calling it "Elgar Court". Shows how sympathetic the City Council was.
I have put in a shameless plug for my Elgar club, please visit, I'll put this particular page onto my links!

It may have been fate or pure accident but a full score of Gerontius was at the end of a row of music at California State University, San Bernardino. My fellow music majors would choose a work to study on our own for a week. This was 1974. The Elgar capti
ated me from the first bars...a kind of pre-echo of
Parsifal which I had never heard either. It was the great Barbirolli recording which drew me into this world of drama, rich melody, and complete devotion. I have studied other recordings, Richard Hickox with first rate soloists and great spontaneous pol
sh, Britten also extremely well prepared-Peter Pears' vibrato drawing attention to itself, Boult and his team excellent but a bit bridled. I have only heard a bit of Sir Simon Rattle's perf. which seemed very fine. I would like to acquire it for more stu
y. The San Fransisco Symphony and chorus will perform it in January, 2000 which I will attend at all costs having never heard it live. For those who understand the work even a little they know this isn't just a concert but a pilgrimage. I have recently p
rchased a study score and continue to be amazed at the inventiveness and modern thinking of his scoring. Indeed the best of him...it also draws the best of us. Elgar will always be loved and admired.

I suspect that such a read would be ambiguous (his moustache causes problems, there's no context, and lip-reading can't distinguish between voiced and unvoiced consonants) but it would still be neat. Also, in another decade or so there will probably be s
ftware to do this. Since his voice HAS been recorded, such a program would then be able to use that spectral data to re-synthesize the missing voice in your footage...

What a wonderful site, Gordon! It is tremendously interesting, easy to navigate, and the photos come across beautifully. You write well too - it just flows! I would only change the color of the guestbook links since they are difficult to read against t
e greyish-white of the page. I will be back to do more "touring." Thanks - Muff

Today I have heard the news of Lord Menuhin's death. Very sad.
I have met him in front of Belle Vue in Great Malvern by chance last summer.
It was too surprisefull encounter for me to talk him something. Then he glanced at me and smiled. It was unforgettable memory for me.
Farewell.

What a pleasant surprise to find your site. I've spent many happy hours visiting the places around Worcester associated with Elgar, and your "tour" brought back a lot of memories. It also made me long for a glass of Hereford cider.
You may be interested to know that Sir Colin Davis and the LSO will be presenting a three-day Elgar Festival at Lincoln Center in New York later this month. Leonard Slatkin will conduct the NY premiere of Elgar/Payne No. 3 in March. With HILARY AND JACKIE
the film about Jacqueline du Pre, playing in New York theaters and the soundtrack album--which includes a complete performance of the Cello Concerto--on display in stores throughout the city, Elgar's visibility here is greater than it's been for years.
I think your site will be getting quite a few new visitors as Americans turn to the web to get more information about Elgar's music.
Congratulations on a job well done!
Cheers,
Frank Beck

A very good, interesting page. I am a family historian, studying the surname ROWBERRY/RUBERY originating in the Hereford/Worcester borders and have used a midi file of a panio reduction of the Enigma Variations as a musical background, as it is very appr
priate, as well as one of my favourite pieces. I have a page of information supplied by Robert S Findley who produced the midi file, but I will be adding links to your page for those interested in finding out more about them.
Many thanks for an absorbing page...Polly

Splendid site! This is what the Internet is all about. Perhaps you could help me find out which chamber music it was of Elgar's that I heard in a UK TV series called "Paradise Postponed". Like Swann in Proust's "Un amour de Swann" I am tantalised (though
ot for the same reasons)by the memory of this once-heard music which made such a deep impression on me. If this query is in the least bit importunate, please ignore it.
Bonne continuation!

I am a descendant of Elgar's, my grandfather being a direct descendant of Harry (so the story goes)so that would make Edward Elgar my grandfather's uncle or perhaps Great Uncle. My grandfather was Richard Charles Edward Elgar and the last male and thus El
ar of that line. I was really interested in all the information I read through the society links and the websites. It was the first time that I had heard about Carice, Elgar's daughter, did she marry and have children?. If anyone has any more information
o piece together my geneological puzzle I'd be happy to hear from them.
