Shimianluo

The Shimianluo is also know as the "Taoluo" or "Zhoushanluo". It is make up of ten Luos (Gongs) of different sizes. They are arranged neatly on a wooden rack and is played by one person.

The Shmianluo is popular in the Southeastern Region of China. In modern China, the Shimianluo is incorporated into a Chinese Orchestra as an important percussion instrument.

Although the name indicates that there are ten Luos, in 1974, the performance of an orchestral work Yu Zhou Kai Ge made use of eleven Luos. Seven Luos and thirteen Luos have also been used. The number of Luos depends on the requirement of the Orchestra. The structure of the the Shimianluo is not standardised.

The sound produced by the Shimianluo has no definite pitch, and its tone is unique. It is suitable for creating the atmosphere of happiness and excitements.

Famous orchestral works that make use of the Shimianluo include Fisherman's Song of the East China Sea.
