My name is Antônio Gonçalves Junior, nicknamed Toninho. I'm not a Guazzelli descendant, but I have been married to a Guazzelli for 25 years. We live in Brazil, South America, in a city called Cruzeiro, in the state of São Paulo. My wife is the granddaughter of Maria Guazzelli, who was born in April 14th, 1904, in Pieve Fosciana, Italy, daughter of Constantino Guazzelli and Aldina Piagentini.
Il mio nome è Antônio Gonçalves Junior, soprannominato Toninho. Non sono un diretto discendente dei Guazzelli, ma sono sposato ad una Guazzelli da 25 anni. Viviamo in una città del Brasile chiamata Cruzeiro, che si trova nello stato di San Paolo. Mia moglie è la nipote di Maria Guazzelli, che era nata il 14 aprile del 1904, a Pieve Fosciana in Italia, figlia di Constantino Guazzelli ed Aldina Piagentini.
Maria and her siblings, except one of them, left Italy in the late 20's and came to Brazil. They were Giuseppe, Nello, Americo, Angelina, Carlo, Setimo, and Maria, all of them deceased. Carlo Guazzelli was the only one who went to Scotland, where he settled with his family in a town called Irvine, on the southwest coast of Scotland.
Maria ed i suoi fratelli, tranne uno di loro, lasciarono l'italia verso la fine degli anni 20 e arrivarono in Brasile. Si trattava di Giuseppe, Nello, Americo, Angelina, Carlo, Settimo e Maria, tutti defunti. Carlo Guazzelli fu l'unico che emigrò in Scozia, dove si stabilì con la sua famiglia in una città chiamata Irvine, sul litorale a sud-ovest della Scozia.
In Brazil, Maria Guazzelli married Francesco Martinelli, and they had their only daughter, named Gioconda, who married Geraldo dos Santos, and they live in Bananal, a little town about 100 km west of Rio de Janeiro. They had four sons and one daughter: Orlando (deceased), Arnaldo, Telma (my wife), Reinaldo and Dinaldo.
In Brasile, Maria Guazzelli ha sposato Francesco Martinelli ed hanno avuto soltanto una figlia, di nome Gioconda, che ha sposato Geraldo dos Santos e vivono in Bananal, una piccola città che si trova a circa 100 chilometri ad ovest di Rio de Janeiro. Hanno avuto quattro figli ed una figlia: Orlando (defunto), Arnaldo, Telma ( mia moglie), Reinaldo e Dinaldo.
Granny Maria always told us that she had a brother who lived in Scotland with his family, but she had lost all contact with him since World War II.
Nonna Maria ci ha sempre raccontato di avere un fratello emigrato in Scozia con la sua famiglia, ma purtroppo ha perso le sue tracce dalla Seconda Guerra Mondiale.
In January 1998, I began to search for Guazzellis in the United Kingdom through the Internet, using the Altavista searching engine. I found only one, called Victor Guazzelli, who was the Archbishop of Westminster, in London. I sent him an email, and asked him if he was one the Guazzellis I was looking for. Unfortunately, I didn't receive any reply. I was working on a project which demanded a lot of travel inside my country, and then I stopped the search for some time.
Nel mese di gennaio del 1998, ho cominciato a cercare i Guazzelli nel Regno Unito attraverso Internet, usando il Motore de Ricerca di Altavista. Ne ho trovato soltanto uno, chiamato Victor Guazzelli, che era arcivescovo di Westminster, a Londra. Gli ho trasmesso una e-mail e gli ho chiesto se fosse uno dei Guazzelli che stavo cercando. Purtroppo, non ho ricevuto alcuna risposta. Stavo lavorando ad un progetto che ha richiesto molti viaggi all'interno del mio paese ed allora ho arrestato la ricerca per un certo tempo.
In May 1999, I decided to continue looking for the Guazzellis in Scotland, this time using the ICQ software. I found some, but none of them living in Scotland. I knew they lived in Irvine, and then I began to search for people living there, and asked them if they knew any Guazzellis. I had two pictures which could help. The first one showed Carlo Guazzelli, his wife and their three children, in 1935. The other was a picture of a bar or a store they had in Irvine, in 1937, named La Marina Cafe. I sent them the pictures, but none of them had heard anything about the Guazzellis.
Nel mese di maggio 1999, ho deciso di continuare a cercare i Guazzelli in Scozia, questa volta usando il software di ICQ. Non ne ho trovato nessuno, che vivesse in Scozia. Ho saputo che hanno vissuto ad Irvine ed allora ho cominciato a cercare la gente che vive là e ho chiesto loro se conoscessero qualche Guazzelli. Ho avuto due immagini in grado di aiutarmi. La prima mostrava Carlo Guazzelli, sua moglie ed i loro tre bambini, nel 1935. L'altra è un immagine di un bar o di un deposito che hanno avuto ad Irvine, nel 1937, chiamato caffè della Marina. Ho trasmesso loro le immagini, ma nessun di loro aveva sentito qualche cosa circa i Guazzelli.
One of them, nicknamed Blondie, looked up in the phone book, and found three Guazzellis, one living in Irvine, another in Girvan and another in Darvel. She gave me the phone numbers, and another user, Nevada, made a call to the one living in Irvine, and found out that his name is Eddie and that he's one of the grandsons of Carlo Guazzelli. Another user, nicknamed WebAuthor, helped me too, making a call to Girvan, where he found a lady of the Guazzelli family.
Una di loro, soprannominata Blondie, cercando nell'elenco telefonico ha trovato tre Guazzelli. Uno chi vive a Irvine, un altro in Girvan ed un altro in Darvel. Blondie mi ha dato i numeri di telefono e un altro utente, chiamato Nevada, ha telefonato a quello che vive ad Irvine ed ha scoperto che il suo nome è Eddie e che è uno dei nipoti di Carlo Guazzelli. Anche un altro utente chiamato WebAuthor mi ha aiutato facendo una chiamata a Girvan, dove ha trovato una signora della famiglia di Guazzelli.
I sent Eddie an email, where I told him what I was looking for, but I was so excited with the discovery, that I couldn't wait for a reply by email. So, I called him directly in Irvine, and he confirmed he was really the grandson of Carlo Guazzelli. I firstly thought that the lady who lives in Girvan was Aldina, also known as Dina, the only daughter of Carlo Guazzelli alive, but later I found out that she lives in Stirling, which was the Scotland's ancient capital, located around 20 miles northeast of Glasgow or 30 miles northwest of Edinburgh. I couldn't yet believe it, but there was no more doubt. I had found the lost link and the search was finally over.
Ho trasmesso a Eddie un email, in cui gli ho raccontato che cosa stavo cercando, ma ero così eccitato dalla scoperta, che non potevo aspettare la risposta per posta elettronica. Così, lo ho chiamato direttamente ad Irvine e mi ha confermato che era realmente il nipote di Carlo Guazzelli. Nell' inizio ha pensato che la signora che vive in Girvan era Aldina, anche conosciuto come Dina, l'unica figlia di Carlo Guazzelli viva, ma più successivamente ho scoperto che vive in Stirling, che era l'antica capitale della Scozia, situato intorno 20 miglia di nordest di Glasgow o 30 miglia di nord-ovest di Edinburgh. Non potevo ancora crederlo, ma non c'era più dubbio. Avevo trovato il collegamento perduto e la mia ricerca era finalmente terminata.
Eddie sent me an email, too. He told me about the Carlo Guazzelli family now and that Dina was going to Italy on vacation on May 15, for two weeks. So, I called Dina and told her we're very glad to have found the descendants of Carlo. She said she was also very "contenta" (happy). The next day I received an email from Martin, Dina's son, who gave me more details about Dina's family, with a picture of his two sons, Michael and Peter, holding their youngest cousin, the baby Aidan, at his christening.
Eddie mi ha trasmesso anche una e-mail. Mi ha raccontato della famiglia di Carlo Guazzelli e di come Dina stesse andando in Italia in vacanza il 15 maggio, per due settimane. Così, ho chiamato Dina e le ho detto quanto siamo felici di avere trovato i discendenti di Carlo. Ci ha detto che anche lei era molto felice. Il giorno seguente ho ricevuto un email da Martin, il figlio di Dina, che mi ha fornito più particolari circa la famiglia di Dina, con un' immagine dei suoi due figli, Michael e Peter, che tiene in braccio il loro cugino più giovane, il piccolo Aidan per l suo battesimo.
