Sergei Vasilyevich Rachmaninov was born at Semyonovo in 1873. In 1891 he completed his piano studies at the conservatory. In 1917 he left Russia. From then until his death in Beverley Hills in 1943, he was obliged to rely largly on performance for a living. Rachmaninov was one of the greatest pianists, but as a composer he is much more known.
