JODECI

The group consists of two pairs of brothers: Joel 'JoJo' and Gedric 'K-Ci' Hailey, and 'Mr' Dalvin and Donald 'DeVante Swing' DeGrate Jnr. Devante is also responsible for most of the group's writing and production. They began their musical career by harmonizing in their local Tiny Grove, North Carolina church services. After they found out they were dating the same girl they decided to form a group instead of fighting. As a result they signed to prominent swingbeat stable Uptown Records in 1991, and the initial results were impressive. Their silky, soulful vocals were stretched over sparse hip-hop beats to produce a debut album 'Forever My Lady'.

With their second album 'Dairy Of A Mad Band' they created a new sound 'sensual R&B' and that got them their nickname 'Bad Boys Of R&B'. The album had the hitsingle 'Cry For You'. Even though they weren't succesfull with the big audience they managed to sell out Ahoy Rotterdam twice. I was there both times. The first time everything went wrong. There was a technical problem which resulted in ending the show early. The group was very angry because they had to let their fans go home dissapointed.

They came back a couple a months later right after they had released their third album 'The Show, The Afterparty, The Hotel'. This time everything went well, but Devante wasn't there just like the first time. Around that time the rumor started they were gonna split up. Devante also didn't appear in the video 'Get On Up'. They denied everything. Then things got quiet around them. It was said they were all working on a solo album. In 1996 K-ci and Jojo came out with a single that appeared on the Bulletproof soundtrack. A couple af month later another single came out. And suddenly there was an album. No solo album like they said it would be. It was also a lot later then planned. The album included the smash hit 'All My Life' that got them the international status and a wider audience.

A second album came out very shortly after their number 1 hit. Too soon if you ask me. The album has some good songs, but I don't like it that much. It's time to come out with another Jodeci album. We'll have to wait a while before that's gonna happen, BUT IT'S GOING TO HAPPEN!! In 2000 they will finally release it. Probably late 2000, because Mr Dalvin will release his solo album early 2000(Finally!) on Maverick records. It's called 'Met-a-mor-phic and the first single is 'Why Can't We' which is already out in the clubs. If there is any news you can read it in the News Section. For now you can enjoy a picture of K-ci while he and Jojo were in Amsterdam for a signing session.
