Stogursey Castle

Reviews:

(Provided by Hugo and Cindy, Cambridge) ....This is a very nice cottage, truly in a unique location, let down rather by the village. The cottage was built atop the ruins of a castle gatehouse, and consequently the living room has three arrow slots or loopholes for windows, set in a very very thick wall, on one side. The entry is via a bridge over the moat, the only access to the inner bailey being through the cottage itself. It suffers though from being very difficult to heat, because the fireplaces really don't work very well at all, and the smoke-detectors do, all too well. According to the logbook, during summer the locals tend to use the outer bailey, the area outside the castle, as a local park, and the moat as a swimming pool, thus accessing your garden, and generally being intrusive, which sounds a great pity. The shops and cafe in the village were rather dull and the lone pub had just changed hands so was not doing food - perhaps we were simply unlucky. Those criticisms aside, as a base for car-based wandering, it's fine, Minehead is a nice seaside town, Exmoor is nearby, and Lynton and Lynmouth are also in easy reach; other nearby villages have plenty of good pubs and restaurants. 5/10 - it needs more heating, and the village was rather dead.
