Note- Aftermarket steering wheels should not be fitted to cars with airbags
* A Boss Kit or Hub Adapter is required to  mate an aftermarket steering wheel to the volvo spindle- dont go cheap- it can and probably will come back to bite you- that goes for the steering wheel too. Anything less than about AU$170 aint worth having. Go for reputable brands such as MOMO, Isotta, Autotechnica etc.
Stuff Needed:

27mm deep socket
Ratchet wrench
Steering wheel
Boss Kit/ Hub adapter*
Allen keys
Steering Wheel Puller
Small flat screwdriver
A new steeing wheel is a must-have for anyone who enjoys driving their car, wants to add a sporting touch to the interior or dislikes the boat-wheel that comes from the factory. Whether you decide to go all out on a leather-bound racing wheel, or simply to replace with another volvo wheel, there are a few considerations if you plan to do the job yourself without losing the plot. I found out the hard way!
Step One
Getting a 27mm deep socket is PARAMOUNT! Do not even contemplate doing this yourself unless you can get one. They are not often sold commercially, here in Sydey, Australia, i had to borrow one from a mechanic, or pay $50 for ONE! Dont try to improvise, it wont work! Once you get your hands on one, its plain sailing.

Park the car on level ground, and ensure the front wheels are dead straight and the steering wheel is the same, otherwise, putting the new steering wheel on could result in some funny straight-line steering wheel response!

Step Two
Pop off the centre cap of the factory steering wheel with a small flat screwdriver, you should be able to see the steering spindle coming through, with a big nut on it.

Drop the 27mm deep socket onto a ratchet wrench and stick it on the nut- start turning and get that nut off.

Once the nut is off, grab the wheel from the dash-side of the rim and give it a pull. If it doesnt move at all, check there is nothing obstructing it and try a few more times, using a see-saw motion of possible. If the wheel wont budge at all, which sometimes happens, you might need to use a steering wheel puller to get the wheel off- you can get them from any good auto-parts shop.

As the wheel comes off, remove the horn wire (black)  and note the position of the indicator-switch-off thing on the wheel- a small raised part on the base of the hub..
Step Three
Once the wheel is off, slide the Boss Kit/ Hub Adapter onto the spindle, with the marked arrow pointing upwards- make sure the indicator-switch-off-thing lines up where the other one did.

Pull the horn cable through the centre of the Boss Kit

Bring back the deep socket and tighten that nut- do not overtighten it. Check that the Boss Kit fits firmly without any movement.

Step Four
Grab your new steering wheel, and place it against the Boss Kit- using the supplied bolts and an allen key, bolt on the new wheel.

Finally, connect the horn button to the wire, clip the horn button in, and away you go.

NOTE; Refer to steering wheel instruction manual for special details regarding Step 4
