Cruise to Alaska

Independence Day, July 4, 2000
Mary, Georgianna, Lydia, Marianne, and Camille
We sent in our select team of experts to represent us in a game of "Passenger Feud."
We were all jubilant when our team almost won.

Early in the morning of July 5, we entered the waters of Cross Sound,
the inlet to Glacier Bay.

Where's Sonny with his BB gun when you need him?
It was here that we spotted our first whales. Occasionally we were treated to a couple of waves of a fin, but mostly we saw only splashes in the quiet water (see below). The picture above shows some of the many passengers that came out on the decks to watch.
Camille and Joe are on the far left.
Thar she blows! Errrr....Thar she splashes!

On the deck of the Sun Princess
Dottie, Denise, Camille, Joe, and Sonny. 'Yo ho ho, the wind blows free, Oh, for the life on the rollin' sea!'
Some of us enjoyed a few relaxing moments on the deck.
'Zzzzzzzz.' 'Ha, ha, ha!''Zzzzzzzz.' 'Zzzzzzzz.'
Some people should learn that it's not nice to laugh at other people!

Glacier Bay

Here is an example of two glaciers overlapping. The "dirty" one on the left being greatly compressed by the enormous pressure of the clean one on the right.

Calving Glaciers

These pictures are about as spectacular (in my humble opinion) as any that I have seen elsewhere of glacial ice crashing into the sea. This is particularly true of the bottom picture where a HUGE slab of ice came tumbling down. You see it here just as it hit the water.

I asked for ice in my water, but this is ridiculous!

There were at least three other ships that cruised with us in Glacier Bay. The one on the bottom, near the face of a "dirty" glacier can be used to judge its size. This glacier is over 500 feet thick and about two miles wide, only a fraction of it could be shown in this photo. The ice at the bottom of the photo are floes created by the breaking glaciers.
