Finding The Right Fit For Your Day

To find the right fit and style for you, you must first select clothes designed to fit your body proportions. Sadly, industry gowns really don't care if their gown is the right gown for your body - the result being expensive alterations which still do not result in the best look for you.

The following tables detail what aspects work with each type of height, breast proportion, and hip proportion.

Height:

Under 5'6: 5'6" to 5'9" Over 5'9"
Petite and average height women should look for natural waistlines and longer lines in skirts and bodices. Avoid horizontal pleating and basque (dropped) waisted skirts. Average to slightly tall women can wear either natural or basque waist styles so long as the basque is under 5 inches. For tall women, use basque waist to shorten the perceive line and use horizontal pleats to cut height to more average appearance. Avoid high heels and poufy headpieces.

Breast Proportion:

Small to medium Large to overly large
To enhance breast size, use sweet-heart and modified sweet-heart necklines. Curves near the breast add perceived curvature. Consider use of pushup bras and corsets to shape and define what you have. To reduce perceived breast size, try V and squared neckline such as found in Italian Renaissance gowns. Go ahead and show your cleavage a bit with a lower cut. By showing some you cut the fabric coverage and the line perceived.

Hips:

Slightly small to well proportioned Large to out of balance large
No impact on most skirt width styles. Consider V lines in the bodice and skirt. Embellishments formed into a V shape at the waist achieve this beautifully. Also try hoop skirts to provide a dramatic A line look if your skirt is A line to full. The wider the hoop, the more dramatic the contrast and the smaller the waist and hips appear.
