File #8- Safe Combination, Top Half

To whoever finds this:

It's all over for us. Our Judgment Day is upon us. We are finally going to have to pay for our sins... But there is a glimmer of hope. I heard from Dr. Karter the other day that 16 new researchers were coming in. He used the safe in Room 001 to store the bags for each of the researchers when they come into the Inn. After all hell broke loose I pocketed the key to Room 001, and tried to get into the safe, but it is just too god damn hard! I know that there HAS to be something good in that safe. The thing is, it is a two level safe. There is a keypad and a dial. The key pad goes from 0-9, and the correct for digit number has to be entered before the dial will even begin to turn. I have no idea what the combination is either. My buddy at the Village Idiot says that only the "elite" can get passed the keypad part of the safe. And even then the dial is too difficult... All I know is that I have to try... or else I'm a goner. I hope it's not--

MF stops dead in his tracks after reading that. What is going on in this Village? All MF knows is that he needs a drink.. and fast. MF passes right by the Inn and heads up the Village Idiot. He opens the door and all he hears is the sound of a hammer pulling back...

AZPunisher- Having watched almost a half dozen people leave before him, AZ finally decides that the airstrip isn't for him. He walks past the welcome banner and popped balloons on his way to the marketplace, only the far north of the Village. He passes the farm, and the housing area where he passes by lj, but he doesn't stop. AZ reaches the marketplace, which is almost like a mini-mall. He walks up to the automatic doors and goes in. The floors are shiny and the lights are bright. Wow... REALLY Bright. Inside the main marketplace building is a bench to relax on, but nothing else of real importance. Looking around, AZ sees @the Grocery Store@ to the left, @the Hardware Store@ to the right, and @the General Store@ directly in front of him. The door into the grocery store has a smeer of something red on it...

*Heads over to the Hardware store, guessing the descriptions of the buildings in the documents he looked over on the plane were early versions, and some changes were made..*

"Where the **** is everybody.."

"What the hell?? What has happened here? And why are our bags stuck in some super-safe?" Then, as I opened the door, I hear the hammer go back and someone scream at me.

So I quickly duck down, raise my arms in the air. "Don't shoot Don't shoot! Don't shoot! I just want a drink for the love of god!"

The stranger is still standing there, but I think he's beginning to calm down. "Um, hello? You mind lowering that peacemaker please? What the hell is going on here!?"

AZPunisher- AZ looks up at the map, and then at the marketplace. By the description on the map, it sounded like this place was an open air market. AZ then catches the date on the bottom of the map "4/03." The map hasn't been updated since the Village first opened... The market HAS gone from being an open air, to a closed form. The skylight areas are a tribute to the way the market once was. AZ turns right to head into the Hardware store, as he opens the door he sees a variety of tools: Hammers, screwdrivers, saws, knives, even a few guns. A man stands at the counter with a gun to his head. He is muttering something under his breath... It sounds like he is... praying? AZ closes the door, and when the man hears this he pulls the gun from his head and points it towards AZ. AZ ducks, and the man drops the gun on the counter.

"I am sorry! I'm so sorry! I thought you were one of... them... Here. Come here, please. It's so good just to see another human face. I thought I was the only one left."

AZ gets back to his feet and just stares at #the man#. There are a hell of a lot of #supplies# here, but I don't think the man would take kindly to you stealing his only protection...

The Bartender fills a mug up to the top and places it on the bar. MF sits down on a stool and surveys the area. There are a lot of tables and chairs, and a handful of stool at the bar. There is a #Jukebox# in the back corner, and a #bar fridge# to the right of the counter. On the counter is a #mug of beer# and #a crumpled napkin#. Behind the counter is obviously #the bartender#. The only other door besides the one you came in is the one that leads to @the back office@.

Seymour Natus, Turducken, and GoldenSunMasterYami- Leaving the game room in a pitiful mess, the three head to the Village Idiot to investigate the shouting. They burst through door of the bar with their weapons poised. Seymour and the bartender are aimed right at each other's heads. Seymour reconizes MF from the flight and lowers his weapon. The bartender promptly does the same.

"Well now, I was surprised to see one fresh face, but four? Drinks all around!"

The bartender fills three more mugs and sets them on the counter. The three men join MF at the bar in silence... There are a lot of tables and chairs, and a handful of stool at the bar. AZPunisher- AZ rises slowly... Not wanting to disturb the already disturbed man...

"For sale? Oh! For sale! You're a customer! In a time like this? Hmm... Well, let's see. I have #a hammer# for $20, some #steel piping# for $100, a nice #shotgun# for $750, and #shotgun shells# at $50 for 7 shells."

AZ takes a closer look at the man and the store. The man looks to be in his late twenties, but his clothes are ripped and his hair is desheveled. Nothing like what you expect from a shopkeeper... Had he been in a scuffle? You notice #a index card# sticking out of the man's front shirt pocket. You also try to see around the counter, but the man blocks you off. Weird... The man gives AZ an odd smile...

"And you don't want to know what happened here... Besides, if I were to tell you... Dr. Karter would turn me into-- Ah, nevermind. It's nothing. Just take a look around for a while. It's just nice to have some company."

AZ is not feeling safe in here, especially with #the handgun# still lying on the countertop...

After looking at the second half of the safe combo, I get a headache. "Well, I am glad I am with you guys, cuz there is no way I could have figured out that part. But what do you suppose this 'Charlie' meant by...."

I stop talking. "Elite? Why does that sound familiar?"
Thinking back to my high school days, when I was an outcast, the cool thing to do was to talk in numerics. It was a way to pass the time, and even became quite popular among the computer geeks.

"Elite....elite.....LEET! E-LEET! That's it!"

The other look up at my random exclamation. "Guys the first part of the code is LEET!"
I can tell from their confused stares that they think I'm a moron. "No no, its the numeric spelling of the word 'elite!' You know, 1337! LEET!"

"Sorry I had to open up this can of nerd, but...."

Now, as soon as this bartender starts talking, maybe we can get to this safe!

Hmmm, noticing how quiet it has been at the bar, I decide to check out the jukebox. Taking the NAPKIN from the bar, I see a vintage record player, filled with the top 40 from 1940. "Thought this place was supposed to be state of the art?"

Noticing that SN has left, I yell at the others, "Look, we need to stick together. He has gone ahead to the safe, and I suggest we go catch up."

Turning my attention back to the bartender, "But NOT before we can some answers! What is this napkin, what is the code for the safe, who is Charlie, and what is the deal with this ancient jukebox?"

After exiting the plane and taking note of the barren surroundings and the impending threat of a storm, Nate turned to take note of which direction the gun turrets were facing.

(Which direction are they facing - towards the airstrip, or towards "the outside"?)

Feeling intimidated by such a sight, and noting how dark both towers were, he didn't bother to investigate those monoliths any further. Turning back to face the rest of the peninsula, he took note of his surroundings, and tried to figure out what each one was based on the file he had received during his flight.

Recalling the flight, he realized he wasn't the flying type. Sitting for so long never agreed with him, because he was such an active person. He hadn't even touched the peanuts (if that's what they even were), thinking he could find something much more healthy to eat once he was on the ground.

Folding up the map and putting it away, he took out his other files and briefly reviewed them. The insinuation of a dangerous situation contained within the files, coupled with the barreness of the town he now was trapped in gave him a deep feeling of foreboding.

*There are plenty of other researchers here, and nothing bad has actually happened yet... but I don't like this* thought Nate.

Taking a deep breath and letting it out slowly, and began following in the footsteps of all the other researchers. He was new to this business, and was not at all comfortable with his new job or his companions, though he and Turducken and begun to form a friendship of sorts.

As he left the airstrip, he noted all the burst balloons on the ground, and decided to grab a balloon and take a look at it and the others.

After his investigation, he headed past the farm and towards the Inn.
