Child's Play

Monte Carlo

Four different items (eg. shapes) are drawn on two sets of cards- a large size and a small size. One large card is placed in each corner of the room. When the music stops, the children move to one corner of the room and stand still. Someone selects one of the smaller cards from the four available. The card that is drawn denotes the group of children that must sit out in the next round. So, for example, the children standing in the corner where the circle is, must sit out if the circle is the card drawn out. Then the music starts again and when it stops, the children move to a corner again. Ask the children sitting down to identify the shape before showing the rest of the group. For example, they might have to say "The triangle people have to sit down". To make this more difficult, you might change from shapes to colours (eg red, blue, purple, yellow) and instead of the same colours you may choose items that are those colours. So the smaller set of cards may have words such as apple, sky, grapes or daffodils. The children must then read the word and decide which group must sit down. The same could be done for letters of the alphabet where each corner may have a different letter (eg. a, b, c, d) and the smaller set of cards may have pictures such as an apple, banana, cat or dog.
