Child's Play

The Ticket Inspector

I play this with a pre-school group in Thailand but I think you could take it in several directions for older children. Everyone lines their chairs up one behind each other, facing the same direction and sit down. I then stand at the front of the line with a wad of small pieces of paper and a silly hat on. I pass down the line prompting each child to produce a word. I then quickly draw a picture representing the word on one side of the 'ticket' and the first letter of the word on the other. I then give the child the ticket.. After this is done I move to the front of the line and to each child in turn say, in a pantomime ticket inspector voice, 'may I see your ticket please?'. The child then gives me their ticket, which I scrutinise, saying 'what's this?' They then repeat the word, I snip the side of the ticket with a pair of scissors and hand it back.

The children seem to love the play, voices, bad drawing etc. and respond very well. At some point I expect to hand the game over to them.
