The Jesse Tree

There was an
old custom in Europe
and early America of hanging
symbolic ornaments on a Christmas tree
during Advent - ornaments which represented the
Messianic prophecies - often with the prophecies included
within the ornaments. For instance, a Lion of Judah ornament might
represent one of the Davidic prophecies. This tree was gradually assembled
during the days of Advent. It was called the Jesse Tree, named after the
father of King David. The Messiah was prophesied to be a descendant
of David, which is the Tribe of Judah -
the royal line of Israel.

Jesse Tree Info

Jesse Trees can trace the Line of the Messiah in one of at least three ways, all of which are fascinating:
  1. Some of the Jesse Tree web pages listed below emphasize the lineage, or "family tree," of the Messiah, rather than the actual Messianic prophecies. They show the line of decent from Adam or Abraham, to Jesus of Nazareth. They sometimes will also show the significance of the relationship.

  2. Other Jesse Tree projects emphasize major Old Testament themes, events, or covenants, rather than simply pointing to the specific prophecies about the Messiah. They show various interpretations, theological points of view, doctrines relating to Messianic prophecies.

    Updated
  3. My Jesse Tree traces many, but not all, of the Old Testament prophecies about the First Advent, or First Coming, of the Messiah of Israel. When you click on a candle of the tree, you will be taken to another page (such as this one) on a "sister website" of ours to view the specific OT (Old Testament) prophecy for that candle, along with a colorful illustration.

    No interpretations are offered. You are left to decide for yourself the meaning or significance. However, a New Testament fulfillment page (such as this one) for each prophecy has been gradually added to the site. Watch for those links at the end of each OT prophecy.

    Please see asteric Footnote 1 on Jesse Tree Symbols.
In reality, all of the methods of constructing a Jesse Tree that are used lead to the same One - in one way or another!

There is also the subject of the Messianic Prophecies of the OT which point to the Second Coming of the Messiah. Christians understand, because of Jesus' teachings and resurrection from the dead, that He would be coming back to earth again to complete His mission, at the end of time. Some rabbis have thought, with only the Old Testament to consider, that there might be two Messiahs coming, because of the two seemingly contradictory descriptions of Him - one as a Victim, and one as a Conguerer.

Jesus cleared all this up, for those who would listen to Him. Instead of two Messiahs, there would be One, who would come to Earth twice! A Jesse Tree leading to His Second Coming, of which Jesus spoke so much about in the NT, would be interesting to construct. These would be the prophecies which describe Messiah as a Conquering and Reigning King, rather than the Humble and Suffering Servant, which He fulfilled during His first Advent.

An example of a Second Advent prophecy would be Psalms 2:8 - and Isaiah 11, which is included in the prophecies used already (such as the Peaceable Kingdom theme of the lion, lamb, and wolf lying down together). Apocalyptic Christian writers, such as Hal Lindsey, Grant Jeffrey, or Dr. Charles Stanley often refer to the "Second Coming," or "End-Times" prophecies (from both the Old and New Testaments); so these are generally more well known than the prophecies pertaining to the First Advent of the Messiah.

To The Jesse Tree

Wise Men still seek Him "And there shall come forth a rod out of the stem of Jesse, and a Branch shall grow out of his roots:" (Isa 11:1 KJV)

And in that day there shall be a root of Jesse, which shall stand for an ensign of the people; to it shall the Gentiles seek: and his rest shall be glorious. (Isa.11:10-KJV)

And again, Esaias saith, There shall be a root of Jesse, and he that shall rise to reign over the Gentiles; in him shall the Gentiles trust. (Rom.15:12-KJV)

To The Jesse Tree

O come, O come, Emmanuel

O come, O come, Emmanuel, And ransom captive Israel,
That mourns in lonely exile here Until the Son of God appear.

Rejoice! Rejoice! Emmanuel shall come to thee, O Israel.

O come, Thou wisdom from on high,
Who orderest all things mightily;
To us the path of knowledge show,
And teach us in her ways to go.

Rejoice! Rejoice! Emmanuel shall come to thee, O Israel.

O come, Thou Rod of Jesse, free
Thine own from Satan's tyranny;
From depths of hell Thy people save,
And give them victory over the grave.

Rejoice! Rejoice! Emmanuel shall come to thee, O Israel.

O come, Thou Day-spring, come and cheer
Our spirits by Thine advent here;
Disperse the gloomy clouds of night,
And death's dark shadows put to flight.

Rejoice! Rejoice! Emmanuel shall come to thee, O Israel.

O come, Thou Key of David, come,
And open wide our heavenly home;
Make safe the way that leads on high,
And close the path to misery.

Rejoice! Rejoice! Emmanuel shall come to thee, O Israel.

O come, O come, great Lord of might,
Who to Thy tribes on Sinai's height
In ancient times once gave the law
In cloud and majesty and awe.

Rejoice! Rejoice! Emmanuel shall come to thee, O Israel.

O come, thou Root of Jesse's tree,
An ensign of Thy people be;
Before Thee rulers silent fall;
All peoples on Thy mercy call.

Rejoice! Rejoice! Emmanuel shall come to thee, O Israel.

O come, Desire of nations, bind
In one the hearts of all mankind;
Bid Thou our sad divisions cease,
And be Thyself our King of Peace.

Rejoice! Rejoice! Emmanuel shall come to thee, O Israel.
