On the following pages you will find links, useful information to help you become more aware of Hypoglycemia. The TLC Committee of RAOK has researched many areas of the net to gather this information.  RAOK TLC does not necessarily support or sponsor or claim to hold any medical background. This is just a helpful service we offer our members as well as any other net users. As with any medical situation it is best to seek the proper medical advice.

Hypoglycemia, also known as low blood sugar, is a relatively rare condition. The symptoms include shakiness, weakness, faintness, headaches, mental dullness, and confusion. Any number of other problems, including stress can cause such symptoms. The only way to diagnose hypoglycemia is through a glucose tolerance test~the same type of test used to diagnose diabetes.

A variety of symptoms occur such as headaches, difficulty in concentration, disorientation, mental confusion, dizziness, faintness, double vision, coldness of the extremities, staggering or inability to walk, muscle twitching, depression, restlessness and mania (excessive excitement). Unless recognized and treated, severe hypoglycemia can lead to generalized convulsions followed by retrograde amnesia and unconsciousness.

Your doctor's approach to long-term treatment (and diet recommendations) will depend on the underlying problem causing the hypoglycemia.  Short-term treatment is designed to raise blood glucose without delay. The immediate treatment of low blood glucose is to eat food-containing sugar. As sugar is absorbed, it will increase the concentration of glucose in the blood and relieve the symptoms of hypoglycemia. Fruits and their juices, sugar cubes, candy and soft drinks are common remedies for low blood glucose, but countless other foods contain carbohydrates and will work as well.

Under special circumstances, your body can function normally with low blood glucose levels. These circumstances include fasting for several days and prolonged strenuous exercise.  If you suspect that you may have hypoglycemia, take the following steps:

  • Discuss your questions and concerns with your doctor.

  • Have your blood glucose level tested when you are experiencing symptoms.

  • If the test determines that you do have hypoglycemia, work with your doctor to identify the underlying cause and appropriate treatment.

  • Talk to your doctor about improving your overall health, including a sensible diet and exercise program.
