Wolves once roamed North
America as did Native Americans. With the migration westward, wolves were systematically
eliminated. This persecution reached its climax in the late 1800s in the Northern Rockies.
In a 25 year period at the turn of the century, over 80,000 wolves were killed in Montana
alone.
Children have been raised to fear
wolves. Fairy tales, stories and songs about the wolf perpetuated a general
misunderstanding that the wolf was a violent and devious killer. Those of us that know and
love our brother/sister wolf know that this is not true and must reach out to the general
public to change their attitude towards our brother/sister wolf.
The pack leader is called the alpha
male and his mate is the alpha female. As social animals, wolves exhibit behavioral
patterns that clearly communicate dominance or submission to each other. The communal
howling of a pack serves to assemble it members, communicate with other packs, advertise
its territorial claims, or it may be a way of expressing pleasure. Visual and scent
signals also play an important part in communication.
The decreasing numbers of
wolves are the result of human encroachments on their territory. Many have long regarded wolves as competitors for prey and as dangerous to
livestock, pets, and people. However, few if any healthy wolves have attacked man. Wolves
usually try to avoid man. |
