WHAT IS EPILEPSY?
Epilepsy is a disorder that disrupts the transmission of electrical signals inside the brain. Although you may assume that epilepsy always causes episodes of uncontrolled movements and loss of consciousness, the condition is actually quite variable. Symptom episodes - known as seizures - are often subtle, causing strange sensations, emotions and behavior. Some people with epilepsy simply stare blankly for a few seconds when having a seizure, while others have full-fledged convulsions. Epilepsy is a desease which defined as paroxysmal and temporary disturbance of brain characterized by loss of consciousness or muscle tic or abnormal sensation, emotion and behaviour. In Accupuncture word, this desease is categorized as 'xian zheng'(epilepsy syndrome) and 'dian xian'(epilepsy).
Risk factors for epilepsy include:
- Babies who are small for their gestational age
- Babies who have seizures in the first month of life
- Babies who are born with abnormal brain structures
- Bleeding into the brain
- Abnormal blood vessels in the brain
- Serious brain injury or lack of oxygen to the brain
- Brain tumors
- Infections of the brain: abscess, meningitis, or encephalitis
- Stroke resulting from blockage of arteries
- Cerebral palsy
- Mental handicap
- Seizures occurring within days after head injury ("early posttraumatic seizures")
- Family history of epilepsy or fever-related seizures
- Alzheimer's disease (late in the illness)
- Fever-related (febrile) seizures that are unusually long
- Use of illegal drugs such as cocaine
Mild head injuries, such as a concussion with just a very brief loss of consciousness, do not cause epilepsy.
Clinical diagnosis
1. Histories of the family, epileptic attack and encephalopathia.
2. Clinical manifestations are vary greatly. There may be grand mal,
rolandic mal, infantile spasms and petit mal. Grand mal is characterized by
suddenly loss of consciousness, involuntary of muscular contraction with
foam in the mouth, which last for 1 to 5 minutes. The patients may then
fall into sleep and awake after a few hours. The petit mal is sudden, short
loss of awareness without aurea and muscle tic, come with interruptions of
speech or action which persist for 2 to 10 seconds. The patients often
normally comes to consciousness quickly.
Types Of Syndromes

tendency to remain in the mother's arms, alternative flush and pallow on
the face, red tongue with white fur, taut and rapid slippery pulse.
2. Epilepsy due to Accumulation of Phlegm
Main symptoms are convulsion of extremities during a fit od epilepsy,
unconsciousness, headache and abdominol pain, come with stridor produced by
phlegm in the throat, salivation, yellow face, thick fur of tongue, and
slippery and rapid pulse.
3. Epilepsy due to Blood Stasis
Main symptoms are with a history of birth injury or tramuma which
characterized as paroxysmal localized headache, occasional vomitting,
paroxysmal convulsion of the whole body or half body or local region upon
attack, dark purple tongue, thready and unsmooth pulses and dark purple
superficial venule of the index finger.
Understanding Seizures
Seizures may look frightening, but they're not painful. They affect different people in different ways. Epileptic seizures fall into two main categories: partial and generalized.
Partial seizures start in one part of the brain. The electrical disturbances may then move to other parts of the brain or they may stay in one area until the seizure is over. A person having a partial seizure may lose consciousness. There may be twitching of a finger or several fingers, a hand or arm, or a leg or foot. Certain facial muscles might twitch. Speech might become slurred, unclear, or unusual during the seizure. The person's vision might be affected temporarily. He or she might feel tingling throughout one side of the body. It all depends on where in the brain the abnormal electrical activity is taking place.
Generalized seizures involve electrical disturbances that occur all over the brain at the same time. The person may appear to be daydreaming, may stare off into space, or may pass out. The muscles may stiffen and the person might make sudden jerking motions, such as flinging the arms outward. He or she may suddenly go limp and slump down or fall over.
Most seizures last only a few seconds or minutes. After a seizure is over, the person might feel sleepy or confused for a few minutes or even an hour or more. People who've had seizures may not remember the seizure or what happened immediately before the event. They may be alert and ready to resume whatever they were doing before the seizure happened. It varies from person to person.
Certain things can sometimes trigger seizures in people with epilepsy. They include:
- flashing or bright lights
- a lack of sleep
- stress
- overstimulation (like staring at a computer screen or playing video games for too long)
- fever
- certain medications
- hyperventilation (breathing too fast or too deeply)
