Chicago McCarthy

*sighs and looks over the papers* All right, first things first, what's your real name? First and last.:

*frowns* Sian McCarthy… But I don’t really like people calling me that. Especially since I really don’t want certain parts of my family finding me… *gives half smile and a sigh* *mutters* Long story…

*scribbles it down on the paper* Next.. um, do you have a nickname? And if you do, how'd you get it?:

*laughs* Sure do! It’s Chicago. *smiles a bit remembering where it came from* The boys back in Dallas gave me that name since that’s where I was born and lived for the first 5 years of my life…

*nods a bit* When's your birthday and how old are you and all?:

I was born on March 20, 1888. First day of spring, though it usually doesn’t act like it… *laughs* I’m 17 years old and proud of every day, well, proud of most days anyway…

*smirks a little* Next is looks so.. tell me what you look like, all right? *rolls his eyes* Humor me...:

*looks down at herself, then back to him* *shrugs* Well, I’m about 5 foot, 3 inches tall by my reckoning, but I haven’t really measured in a while so maybe I’ve grown… *gives hopeful look* Probably not… Anyway, I have brown hair… *fingers chin length hair* …that’s really poorly cut at the moment. I was leaving Savannah, Georgia and had to make a quick escape and couldn’t afford to have anyone recognize me… Heh… Hmmm… I’ve been told that my eyes changed from blue to green in the past few years, but I think that they have always been more of a bluish-green… I have more curves than I really care for, but I’m proud of my tanned skin. I’ve spent so much of my life on the streets hawkin’ headlines that I doubt that I’ll ever be as pale as my brothers… *shrugs* I’ve also been told that I kick, and hit for that matter, like a mule, but I don’t really know if the strength shows… *shrugs again* *is wearing a pair of black slacks, just a bit to big, with a white shirt peeking out from underneath her other dark blue shirt* *one of her currently dangling black suspenders is caught on the black hat hanging out of her pocket* *taps the toe of one of her well worn shoes against the ground, thinking* I guess that’s all…

Hmm.. *writes down some of that then looks back up* What kind of person are you? What's your personality like and all that?:

*bites lip and thinks for a moment* Well, I guess I’m pretty loud, but that’s mostly because I’ve been selling papes for the last 11 years… I didn’t really grow up like a "proper lady." In fact, I was rarely around any girls except Singe and Mule, but they sold for a different paper and in different places, so I didn’t really see them very often… *thinks* I love horsing around and playing cards, even though I’m not very good, but I also know when to calm down and be serious. *thinks for a moment* I guess I try to make everything I do fun… *doesn’t think of it, but also knows how and when to keep a secret*

*raises an eyebrow then grins* If you say so. *teasing, of course* Okay, so do you have any friends around here?:

*sighs* Not yet, I’ve only been in the state for a couple of days, not really long enough to make any friends… Though I do hope to make some soon…

*nods some and taps the pen on the paper* And, uh, you got anyone special in your life right now? *grins* You know what I mean.:

*blushes* Well, I was sweet on my pal Murmur back home in Texas, but he doesn’t really know where I am and I don’t plan on telling anyone from there, so I guess that’s the end of that… *smiles sadly* Other than that I haven’t really met anyone here and got to know them that well, so… *shrugs*

So, you got any family? *scratches his head with the end of the pen* Mother, father.. sisters or brothers? Anything like that?:

*sighs* I got three brothers and a whole mess of cousins that I don’t even slightly know… I have two older brothers, Cedric and Conor, then my younger brother Liam. *winces as she realizes the first part of the question* Both my parents are dead…

*sighs, looking at the next question* Now you don't gotta say, but it'd be nice if you at least gave me something to write down... how'd you come to live at this fine place? *small smile*:

*winces* Might as well tell it… Can’t let the past control the future, after all… It’s a long story though… *glances Ransom’s way to look for any signs of protest* *shrugs and continues* I’ll try to make it as short as I can… I was born in Chicago and lived there till I was five. Cedric and Conor were 10 and 8 respectively when we left. About 6 months before that my little brother Liam was born. Basically, the reason we left was my Da’ gambled with a lot of money he didn’t have and lost. Both he and my mother were shot over it... Cedric decided that we should move and took us to a foster home of sorts in Dallas. When they were old enough he and Conor took jobs to support all of us while going to night school… Anyway, I immediately took to roaming the streets when we moved there and met Question and Answer, two older newsboys who gave me my nickname and took me under their wing. About a year later I started selling papes for The Buffalo Reflex on my own, though I’d been helping Answer for months by that point. Eventually they left and I started spending time with Murmur, Hamlet and Buzzard. *sighs and pauses* *braces herself for next part* About the time I turned 15, Cedric started beating me, among other things… My other brothers were so busy that they really didn’t notice. Murmur, who had become my best friend and selling partner by that time, began noticing more bruises on me than usual and the fact that I got much quieter. *sighs* He always was too observant for his own good… When he finally got outta me what was happening, he helped me sell extra papes and once we had earned enough he told me to buy a train ticket to Savannah. I spent about a year there, but things didn’t exactly work out, so I used the last of my savings to come up here… *blinks a few times, clearing her eyes* *sniffs and grins* I warned ya’ it was long…

*nods and scans over the application* I think that's it... anything else you wanna add?:

*thinks* Um, not really, except the fact that I am an idiot when it comes to taking bets. *laughs* I once jumped from a building to a train that was going full speed, rode it for a few miles then jumped off into a conveniently placed lake… *grins* Did I mention that that was especially stupid for me to do because I can’t swim? *chuckles* Didn’t think so… *gets a far-away look in her eyes* I also love reading my mother’s old Shakespeare book, I have Hamlet to thank for that interest… *stands* Thanks for hearing me out… *leaves hoping that it works out here, knowing that it’s the last chance that she’ll likely get*
