It Ain't a Fine Life

by: Slash McFellan

It had been an average day for Mrs. Abigail Greer. She was an old woman, recently widowed, who lived all alone in a small apartment. Her regular day was as dull as a sack of potatoes. She only went out of her Apartment twice a week to buy groceries. She was a very boring old lady, who lead a boring life. But tonight was different. She could tell by the strange quietness in the Dark Alley as she made her way home. Suddenly, the quietness was broken by the shrill cry of a baby. Mrs. Greer whisked around and saw that she had walked right past a small baby, wrapped in newspaper. She knelt down beside it and shook her head. She had heard of things like this happening before. Teenage mothers abandoning their babies in darkened alleys, either to die, or if lucky, be found and taken in. Mrs. Greer dropped her grocery bag and picked up the baby. It was a girl. She cradled in her arms, attempting to comfort it. She looked around, hoping that by some strange miracle, she could find the Baby's Parents, but no one was around. She sighed and looked back at the baby.

Instead of leaving her, or turning her into an orphanage, She decided to take her in as her own. She stood up and walked out of the alley, cradling the poor child, her groceries lay forgotten.
