2005 Catherines Fat Ass 50kand Catoctin 50k/Catherines 50k Double Results and Race Report

Thanks to all those that helped at Catherines, as well as those who ran. It is tough getting volunteers for a hot, humid, buggy day in the mountains, especially during vacation season.

Special thanks go out to Vicki Kendall, Kim Davidson, Sophie Speidel, and Quatro Hubbard for joining in out trail maintenance and getting thre trail mostly clear. Major credit for the post-race extravaganza goes to the GrillMeister, Tom Corris. Also, thank you to the VHTRC for their financial and equipment support. It makes runs like Catherines possible. Great job by all the volunteers!

The party finally broke up at 7:30pm, with the course clear, the food eaten, and most of the beer drunk. A good time was had by all, some times were faster than others, some times were longer than others, but all had a good time. Mike Mason ran only the fourth sub-5 hour time at Catherines (third fastest ever)in 4:51, while Caitlyn Ramsey was the third fastest female ever as well with her 5:44:07. Sean Andrish did the Catoctin/Catherines Double and still finished second at Catherines.

Sean showed why he is the National USATF 100 mile champion, with second place finishes in each race of the weekend. (Catoctin winner Serge Arbona tried to do the double, but unfortuatelty became lost on the drive to Catherines and did not run. That would have made it very interesting!)

Everyone ran the double differently. Some raced one or the other, while some cruised both. Both courses are hard in their own way and the weather was worse for Catherines.

The three women who completed the double were the least degraded of everyone at Catherines. Vicki actually ran 24 minutes faster at CFA than at Catoctin, while Kerry was only 5 minutes slower and Barb Isom just 11 minutes off here Catoctin time. The men averaged a slowing down of more than 35 minutes. North Carolina's Joey Anderson was the least degraded man in the double, so to speak of course. Joey only slowed 15 minutes on Sunday.

Of the double finishers, all but two have completed either MMT or The Ring. While it was fun to watch, I'm not sure the double will ever exist again officially. I believe next year Catoctin and Catherines will not be the same weekend.
