University Seminar exposes learners to university life, in addition to the skills necessary for success in life after college. Through active discussions, hands-on projects and opportunities for outside learning, you will explore the multiple tasks and responsibilities of a college student, as well as gain a better appreciation for the benefits of a university education.

Attendance Policy
There is a strong correlation between class attendance and college success. Because of the interactive nature of this course it is important that you attend class. Most of the points earned in this class with come through daily attendance and class discussion.
Assignments: Students must visit teacher’s web page to find assignments for each class.
August 29— TOPIC: Introduction
Syllabus will be handed out. Grading system will be explained. Purpose of course will be discussed. (attendance – 5 points)

Sept. 3— Labor Day. No class

Sept. 5— TOPIC: Learning about one another.
PURPOSE: To encourage students to become familiar with other students in the class.
Teacher will introduce himself. Will talk about himself for a few minutes. Each class member will stand up, introduce themselves, will tell us his or her major, etc. Will play “where am I from?” game. (Attendance – 5 points)

Sept 10 — TOPIC: Exploring Campus
PURPOSE – to help students to prepare for the four years they will be spending on campus.
Students will report to class. Will be divided into groups of two or three. Will be given campus map. Will be asked to find 5 buildings or sites. Must tell me 1) color, 2) exterior ( ex.- white brick, stucco, wood, glass, concrete), 3) how many stories, 4) next closest building, 5) what is building used for. They will have to color in the correct buildings on the map and return the map to teacher before end of class to get maximum credit. (Attendance and participation -- 5 points maximum)

Sept 19— TOPIC: First written assignment. Abstracting & Indexing
PURPOSE: Will prepare students for writing short, written assignments
Class will have short story to read. They must summarize the story in 25 words or less,
but give it three subject headings. In class, students will be given an article to read from
the Wall Street Journal. They will have to summarize it in __ words or less. (10 points)
NEXT ASSIGNMENT: Take Myers-Briggs test, Brain test. Write down the results. Visit web sites that explain the meaning of the test ( listed below).

Sept 24 — TOPIC: Self-assessment
PURPOSE: To learn more about yourself
Teacher will discuss results of tests (Myers-Briggs, Brain Test). Will discuss people that are seemingly hard to get along with. Teacher will talk about the different type personalities.
Teacher will show video on M-B. Students who do both tests will receive maximum points (5).

PURPOSE: To help the student learn more and achieve better grades

PURPOSE: To help student define the meaning of success

Oct 3 – TOPIC: What is Truth?
PURPOSE: Distinguishing opinion vs. fact
Students should be able to distinguish between the two because most statements, lectures, TV programs, most articles are a mixture of fact and opinion, i.e., what is known vs. what is believed. Many times it is not easy to tell the difference.
In class, students will be given a list of “facts” and will be asked to determine which are true and which are false.

Oct 8 — TOPIC: Self-actualization
PURPOSE: Discussion of Maslow and his hierarchy and how it pertains to ones life and goals
Students will be given a Maslow pyramid in class and asked to fill it in. Name will not be put on it. Students will be in groups and papers will be shuffled and passed out. Students will try to identify each other by pyramid. Students will learn that people have different goals and ideas but that that the pyramid “holds true.” Will read and discuss article, “Women show the way to maturity.” (attendance – 5 points)
